51. Anoplodesmus anthracinus Pocock, 1895 View in CoL
Anoplodesmus anthracinus Pocock, 1895: 798 View in CoL (D).
Anoplodesmus anthracinus View in CoL — Attems, 1898: 349 (D, K); 1914: 205 (L, K); 1936: 208 (L, K); 1937: 99 (D, K); Weidner, 1960: 79 (L); Jeekel, 1965a: 112 (D, R, K); 1965b: 124 (L); 1968: 59 (M); Hoffman, 1973b: 376 (D, M); Nguyen, 2010: 53 (L); Nguyen and Sierwald, 2013: 1274 (L); Minelli, 2015: 406 (M); Golovatch and Wesener, 2016: 40 View Cited Treatment (L).
Prionopeltis kathanus Chamberlin, 1921: 80 View in CoL (D), synonymized by Hoffman (1973b: 376).
Anoplodesmus kathanus View in CoL — Attems, 1936: 209 (L); 1937: 106 (L, M); Jeekel, 1965a: 110 (L, M); 1968: 59 (M).
Records from Myanmar: Rangoon ( Pocock 1895); Minhla ( Jeekel 1965a); Upper Burma, Katha, Sagaing ( Chamberlin 1921). Based on an indefinite number of syntypes of both sexes, shared between the collections of the London, Genoa and Hamburg museums ( Weidner 1960; Hoffman 1973b), the holotype and paratypes of A. kathanus View in CoL are in the Museum of Comparative Zoology in Harvard, U.S.A. ( Chamberlin 1921; Hoffman 1973b).
Remarks. This is the type species of the genus Anoplodesmus .
Attems (1937) synonymized Jonespeltis splendidus Verhoeff, 1936 , from Kovalam, India ( Verhoeff 1936) with A. anthracinus , from Rangoon, Myanmar, without justification. But Jeekel (1965a) resurrected both to their fullspecies statuses. Several studies on the biology and ecology of Jonespeltis splendidus had been accomplished in India ( Bano et al. 1976; Bano and Krishnamoorthy 1977, 1978, 1979, 1981a, 1981b, 1985; Bano 1990, 1992, 1993, 1996a). Bano (1996b), in a summary of the paradoxosomatid fauna of India, followed Attems (1937) and considered Jonespeltis splendidus as a junior synonym of Anoplodesmus anthracinus . This provided the first formal record of A. anthracinus from India. There is no doubt that Anoplodesmus is a subjective senior synonym of Jonespeltis Verhoeff, 1936 (e.g. Nguyen and Sierwald 2013), but the status of splendidus vs. anthracinus remains dubious (e.g. Golovatch and Wesener 2016). For the time being, we consider A. anthracinus as a species found in Myanmar, as well as Malaysia and Sri Lanka ( Golovatch and Stoev 2013).
