Synonymy between Chthonius C.L. Koch, 1843 View in CoL and Obisium Leach, 1814

The genus Chthonius C.L. Koch, 1843 was created for Chelifer trombidioides Latreille, 1804 and Obisium orthodactylum Leach, 1817 , which Koch (1843) treated as separate species, even though they are objective synonyms ( Judson 1997). The type species of Chthonius was later designated as O. orthodactylum by Simon (1879), who also overlooked this synonymy. Chthonius is thus a junior objective synonym of Obisium Leach, 1814 , but remains the valid name of the genus because Obisium Leach, 1814 is a junior homonym of Obisium Illiger, 1798 .
