Stigmacoccus paranaensis Foldi

Material examined. BRAZIL, Sta Catarina, Florianopolis, Campus of Univ. Fed. de Santa Catarina, on trunk of Schizolobium excelsum (Fabaceae) , 10.viii.1998, G. Mottana ( BMNH): 1/1 prepupa exuvia + a pupal skin. Both very membranous and somewhat distorted. Note: this specimen was too poor to illustrate but the following important details were noted.

Unmounted material. Unknown.

Mounted material. Length 3.1 mm, width 1.5 mm; as for S. garmilleri unless otherwise stated. Antennae 9 segmented; legs fairly well developed, tibia malformed and strongly bent; both thoracic and abdominal spiracles without associated loculate pores; hairs and hair-like setae present, frequent; loculate pores each about 10 ųm wide, mainly with 5 loculi, without hairs on derm near pore margin: frequent over body; tubular pores probably of two sizes, present throughout; oval segmented pores absent from posterior abdominal segments.

Dorsum. Setae rather short and sparse, hair-like setae each about 42 ųm long; hairs each 15–25 ųm long. Tubular pores of 2 sizes: large possibly mainly on posterior abdominal segments, each about 11–12 ųm wide, small each 7–8 ųm wide, present throughout. Eyespots obscure, each about 65 ųm wide. Abdominal spiracles with two atria: outer atrium about 16 ųm long and about 30 ųm wide, with a ring of minute pores along inner margin; inner atrium about 30–33 ųm long and 33–35 ųm wide, opening into trachea; abdominal spiracles each without a group of associated loculate pores; posterior pair of spiracles on segment VIII about 210 ųm apart.

Venter. Hair-like setae perhaps slightly longer and less spinose than those on dorsum. Antennae 9 segmented, each about 760 ųm long. Mouthparts absent. Wing-buds each short (about perhaps 150 ųm long) and rounded. Thoracic spiracles unclear, each spiracle without an associated group of loculate pores. Legs: metathoracic legs: lengths (ųm): coxa 375; trochanter + femur 655; tibia 650; tarsus 380; claw 150; each coxa with only about 4 long setae near articulation with trochanter; trochanter with 9 campaniform sensilla on each side; tibia each with at least 3 campaniform sensilla; each tibia clearly bent almost at right angles; tarsi each with 1 tarsal campaniform sensilla; claw digitules setose, of different lengths, one about 16 ųm, other about 38 ųm.

Comment. The main difference that could be detected with some confidence between the prepupae of these two species was the presence of hairs on the derm near the margin of most loculate pores on S. garmilleri (absent on S. paranaensis ).
