Gerbillus burtoni F. Cuvier 1838 View in CoL
Gerbillus burtoni F. Cuvier 1838 View in CoL , Trans. Zool. Soc. Lond., 2: 145.
Type Locality: Sudan, Dharfur.
Vernacular Names: Burton's Gerbil.
Distribution: Known only from the type locality.
Conservation: IUCN – Critically Endangered.
Discussion: Usually treated as a synonym of G. pyramidum ( Pavlinov et al., 1990; also see references in Lay, 1983), but Lay (1983) mustered diagnostic cranial traits seen in the original cranial illustrations that appear to distinguish them. Until a critical revision of the G. pyramidum complex defines the status of burtoni , we retain it as a species following Lay.
