Subshrubs, shrubs or trees, monoecious or rarely dioecious, latex clear or orange after oxidizing, stems erect or subdecumbent with stellate-porrect or radiate trichomes; stipules present, persistent or caducous. Leaves alternate, entire or rarely lobed ( Astraea lobata ( Linnaeus 1753: 1005) Klotzsch (1841: 194), petiolate, margin entire to serrate, usually with glands at the apex of the petiole and/or along the leaf margins. Thyrses terminal or axillary with pistillate flowers at the base and staminate flowers upwards in cymules of 1–8 flowers. Staminate flowers: calyx 5-merous, free or united, stellate or lepidote externally; petals 5, free, glabrous or villous, usually barbellate at the base and ciliate on the margins; stamens free, inflexed in bud, anthers longitudinally dehiscing, glabrous or villous; disk 5- lobed or 5-segmented. Pistillate flowers subsessile or pedicellate; calyx (3–)5(–8)-merous, free, stellate or lepidote; petals rudimentary or absent, sometimes developed; ovary usually globose, stellate or lepidote; styles 2-fid to multifid, glabrous or stellate; disk (3–)5(–8)-lobed or (3–)5(–8)-segmented. Fruits capsular, globose or oblong; seeds dry, carunculate.
