Trachynotothrips brevispinis Masumoto & Okajima View in CoL
This species has been known only from a single male collected on Phuket Island, Thailand. The description of the female given here is based on the specimens listed below.
Female macroptera. Body light brown with brown markings ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 11–20 ). Head brown; antennal segments I–II and VI–VIII light brown; III–V yellowish white with distal half light brown ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 11–20 ). Prothorax uniformly yellowish white ( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 11–20 ). Meso- and metathorax light brown with brown markings laterally. Fore wings light brown with three clear areas. Fore and mid legs light brown; hind leg pale yellow. Abdominal segments I–II yellowish white, III brown anterio marginally, segments III–VII brown, VIII–X whitish yellow. Body setae brown.
Head longer than wide; dorsal surface with anastomosing lines of sculpture having small wrinkles between sculpture lines in front of fore ocellus ( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 11–20 ). Compound eyes with lanceolate setae. Antennae 8-segmented; III and V with microtrichial rows on both dorsal and ventral surfaces and with forked sense cones; IV widest at middle, tapering at distal half; segment VI with inner sense-cone surpassing middle of segment VIII and a ventral apical sense-cone exceeding apex of segment VIII ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 11–20 ).
Pronotum transverse with striation; anteroangular setae small, one pair; posteroangular setae two pairs ( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 11–20 ). Mesosternum without sternopleural suture; furca with a spinula. Metasternal furca strongly developed Y-shaped extending to mesothorax with a median spinula ( Fig. 15 View FIGURES 11–20 ). Mesonotum with transverse striae on posterior half; median pair of setae situated near posterior margin. Metanotum with transverse striae; median pair of setae situated at near anterior margin ( Fig. 17 View FIGURES 11–20 ). Maxillary palps 3-segmented. Fore wing surface covered by transverse rows of equal length of microtrichia; upper vein with 6 setae; lower vein with 5 setae; clavus with 4 setae. Abdominal tergites I–VIII with striation outside of B2 setae; II with four lateral maginal setae ( Fig. 16 View FIGURES 11–20 ). Abdominal sternites with three pairs of posteromarginal setae and no discal setae ( Fig. 18 View FIGURES 11–20 ).
Measurements in microns. Distended body length 858. Dorsal head length 78; across cheeks 33; compound eye dorsal length (width) 42 (32); Pronotum median length (width) 93 (183). Fore wing length 516. Ovipositor length 132. Antennal length 213, segments I–VII length (width) as follows: 24 (20), 32 (25), 27 (20), 33 (18), 29 (16), 38 (12), 9 (4), 17 (2).
Male macroptera. Body colour and other characters similar to female ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 11–20 ). Abdominal tergites III–IV with two pairs of short spine-like stout setae present laterally ( Fig. 20 View FIGURES 11–20 ). Abdominal sternites V–VI with numerous pore areas ( Fig. 19 View FIGURES 11–20 ).
