The Psittacinae is a low-diversity radiation endemic to Africa comprising two genera, Psittacus and Poicephalus . The Psittacinae split from their sister clade, the Arinae in the early Oligocene (~30 Mya; fig. 1) well after the proposed split between Africa and South America in the Middle Cretaceous age, about 115–125 Mya ( Valencio and Vilas, 1969).
