Scalpellum rodstromi Boone, 1927:145 –147, fig. 33.

Not Trianguloscalpellum pentacrinarum Zevina, 1981: 296 –297, fig. 223.

Material examined. Holotype. YPM 5914; Yale Peabody Museum, Division of Invertebrate Zoology. Collected IV/21/1925 near English Cay, off Belize (Caribbean Sea) between 17°12'45''N, 88°00'00''W and 17°16'55''N, 88°00'00''W. Depth 219– 371 m. Collector “Pawnee I”. Specimen attached to an article of a cirrus of Stylometra spinifera ( Carpenter, 1881) (Echinodermata: Crinoidea: Comatulida : Thalassometridae ); a larger fragment of the cirrus was present separately in the jar.

Remarks. Clark (1921) noted that while “ Scalpellum is very seldom seen on the cirri of the comatulids, it is not at all unusual to find it on Stylometra ” which is also a comatulid. The crinoid from the “Pawnee I” sample was noted by Clark (1950: 36), who mistakenly gave the sample location as “ Bahamas ”, which differs from the coordinates given on the label as well as from the locality in Boone’s (1927) report, which are both off the coast of Belize.

Original description. The species was described by Boone (1927) who, supposing it to be closely related to T. pentacrinarum , made some erroneous statements in the description (no R, six tiers of peduncular plates and L2s present). This led Zevina (1981) to mistakenly synonymize it with T. pentacrinarum ( Pilsbry, 1907) .

Supplementary description. Capitulum 5.0 by 3.00 mm, peduncle length 3.0 mm, width 1.0 mm. Capitulum laterally compressed. Color of plates off-white to ivory. No cuticle visible between capitular plates, cuticle between peduncular plates varying from white to very pale yellow. Specimen bending toward cirri of crinoid.

CL triangular, not flat, thickened, bending towards occludent side, overlapping RL. Surface with inflation in carinal part and depression in rostral basal area. Umbo apical, apex pointed, bent towards occludent margin. Carinal margin convex, rostral and basal margins concave. CLs abutting in lowermost point.

RL almost rectangular, conspicuous, two times as long as high, not narrowing towards occludent margin. Faint ridge from apex to carino-basal angle. Umbo on occludent margin, slightly projecting. Basal and scutal margins straight, basal margin slightly shorter than scutal, parallel; lateral margin convex. RLs abutting above R. R typical, upper part rounded, sitting under abutting upper edges of RLs. Height 0.25 mm, width 0.2 mm. Peduncular plates initially organized in 7 tiers (rl-l-cl-c), eighth tier (r, under R) appearing during ontogeny now seen near middle of peduncle (thus there is a total of 8 tiers from there on up to capitulum). Plates per tier 15 on carinal side, ~ 10 on lateral sides, 7 on rostral side.
