Lowryorchestia campbelliana ( Bousfield, 1964)

( Figs 3 View FIGURE 3 , 5 View FIGURE 5 )

Parorchestia campbelliana Bousfield, 1964: 7 , figs 3–4.

Type locality. Courrejolles Peninsula, Campbell Island, New Zealand.

Holotype. Dominion Museum , New Zealand.

Diagnostic description. Antenna 1 medium length, reaching to mid-point of antenna 2 peduncular article 5; flagellum shorter than peduncle. Antenna 2 short, flagellum a little longer than peduncle. Mandible left lacinia mobilis 4-dentate. Maxilliped palp stout, article 4 distinct, cone-shaped, longer than basal width. Male and female gnathopod 1 merus, carpus and propodus each with palmate lobe. Male gnathopod 2 carpus small, cup-shaped; propodus large pyriform, palm very oblique with about 7 strong robust setae. Female gnathopod 2 mitten-shaped, merus, carpus and propodus each with palmate lobe. Pereopod 7 just longer than pereopod 6. Pleopods subequal, long, peduncular margins naked. Uropod 1 peduncle subequal to rami, distolateral robust seta one quarter length of exopodite; rami subequal; exopodite without marginal robust setae; endopodite with 4 marginal robust setae. Uropod 2 exopodite without marginal robust setae, endopodite with 2 rows of marginal robust setae. Uropod 3 peduncle with one marginal and one subdistal robust seta; ramus three quarters length of peduncle. Telson broadest medially and broad distally with a pair of unequal terminal robust setae and a pair of weak marginal robust setae on each side. Coxal gills plate-like, unbranched. Oostegite setae with coil tips.

Habitat. Mollymawk rookery.

Distribution. Courrejolles Peninsula, Campbell Island, subantarctic New Zealand.

Remarks. This species is most similar to the other New Zealand species L. riparicola sp. nov. in the coil-tipped oostegites, but shares a few other character states with Protorchestia Bousfield ( Table 1). Campbell Island lies on the submarine microcontinent of Zealandia, a key piece in the reconstruction of Gondwana ( Grobys et al., 2014). There have been no shallow-water (< 500 m) links to mainland New Zealand for Campbell and Auckland Island since the two volcanic islands were formed, apparently, in the Miocene. The high-tidal grass-dominated salt marsh on Campbell Island is similar in its extremely low species richness of benthic foraminifera to that reported from Tierra del Fuego at a similar latitude ( Hayward et al. 2007). Ten percent of the fauna of Campbell Island has not been recorded from mainland New Zealand.
