Barypalpus ruficornis Cameron View in CoL

Barypalpus ruficornis Cameron 1932: 276 View in CoL .

Type material: Lectotype ♂ (present designation): “Type \ Birmah Ruby M es \ Doherty \ Fry Coll. 1905.100. \ Barypalpus ruficornis Cam. Type” ( BMNH) .— Paralectotype: 1 ♀ (“Cotype”) with same data as holotype ( BMNH) .

Description (Habitus: Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1–2 ): 10.0– 11.1 mm long (4.8–5.2 mm, abdomen excluded). Black, shining; palpi and labrum pale reddish, antennae reddish brown, suture of elytra sometimes obscurely reddish, particularly in the type specimens which might be paler due to their age; posterior margins of tergites IV–VI narrowly but well delimited reddish, tergite VII more broadly and tergite VIII entirely reddish; legs dark reddish brown, protarsi paler reddish, distinctly paler that tibia.

Head ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 9–12 ) rounded quadrangular, 1.20–1.25 times as wide as long; eyes very small, tempora subparallel, 1.6–1.8 times as long as eyes, dorsal surface with only a few larger setiferous punctures along medial margin of eyes, on tempora and along base of head; hind angles of head broadly rounded; surface of head without microsculpture, but with moderately dense micropunctation; antennae moderately long, segments 4–5 slightly oblong, segments 6–8 about as long as wide, segments 9 and 10 slightly transverse; pronotum slightly longer than wide (ratio 1.04–1.09), widest at anterior third, sides weakly rounded, surface without any setiferous punctures, polished, with micropunctation as on head; scutellum sparingly punctate; elytra ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 13–16 ) along sides markedly longer than pronotum along midline, with irregular rows of larger punctures, becoming distinctly finer and less dense laterad, and with interspersed finer punctation, along sides almost only very fine punctures left, hypomera densely and coarsely punctate; abdominal tergites with dense and coarse, almost pit-like punctation, from third visible tergite on, punctural grooves becoming increasingly longitudinal posteriad; tergite VII with whitish seam of palisade setae; male sternite VIII ( Fig. 29 View FIGURES 25–29 ) with moderately deep medio-apical emargination and narrow semi-membranous extension.

Aedeagus ( Figs 17, 18 View FIGURES 17–24 , 25 View FIGURES 25–29 ) rather small; apical portion of median lobe widened in ventral view ( Fig. 17 View FIGURES 17–24 ), outline more or less regularly convex, apex subacute, in lateral view ( Fig. 18 View FIGURES 17–24 ) with apex shortly, slightly hook-like bent toward paramere, with minute subapical tooth on parameral face; paramere ( Fig. 25 View FIGURES 25–29 ) slender, subparallel-sided, somewhat shorter than median lobe, apex either subtruncate, slightly convex or slightly emarginate, peg setae arranged in two irregular sublateral rows, number and arrangement of peg setae seems to be quite variable.

Diagnosis: See following species and key.

Additional material examined: MYANMAR: 1 ♂: Mandalay Region, Mogok Township, S Panlin village, Mt. Taung Mae , W-slope, 1710–1750 m, ca. 22°58’09”N 96°27’13”E, 10.–18.VI.2014, FIT, leg. Brunke & Schil- lhammer [MBS 201C] ( NMW) GoogleMaps ; 1 ex.: same collecting event as previous, but probably with slightly differing labels ( NHMD); (3 ♂♂: ibidem, but, 1780 m, ca. 22°58’03”N 96°27’22”E, 17.–21.V.2016, FIT, leg. Schillhammer, Brunke, Jenkins-Shaw, Jensen [MBS 213A] ( NMW). GoogleMaps

Distribution: The species is at present known only from the type locality. Mount Taungmae is regarded as being roughly the place where W. Doherty collected the type specimens (environments of Bernardmyo, north of Mogok).
