Neosilurus pseudospinosus Allen and Feinberg View in CoL

False-spined Catfish

Neosilurus pseudospinosus View in CoL is a cryptic species that is generally only encountered in low numbers throughout its range, which also encompasses the Victoria and Daly Rivers in the Northern Territory ( Allen et al. 2002). The species, which is readily distinguished by the presence of flexible dorsal and pectoral spines, compared to the stiff spines found in other members of the genus ( Allen & Feinberg 1998), is known from the Fitzroy, Isdell, Calder, Carson, Drysdale, Durack and Ord Rivers ( Fig. 11). However, its presence in most systems appears to be confined to the headwaters; within the Ord River it is known only upstream of Lake Argyle, a major water storage reservoir.
