Northwest Glassfish

This species was previously ( Allen & Burgess 1990) referred to as Ambassis muelleri Klunzinger. However, Allen et al. (2002) indicated A. muelleri , which was originally described from the Murray River of southern Australia (hence a junior synonym of Ambassis agassizii Steindachner ), is an incorrect name for the Kimberley fish, which also ranges eastward to the Gulf of Carpentaria drainage. It appears to be an undescribed species and although it is widespread across the Kimberley region, there is a need to examine various populations to address concerns regarding the exact nature of this species complex ( Fig. 24). Currently, the species is known from Fitzroy, May, Meda, Isdell, Charnley, Calder, Prince Regent, Mitchell, King Edward, Carson, Drysdale, King George, Berkeley, Forrest, Durack, Pentecost, King and Ord Rivers. Considerable morphological differences are found within this species complex and it is likely that more than one species is involved.
