Taxonomy. Callithrix torquata Hofmansegg, 1807 ,
interior of the Brazilian state of Para. Restricted by P. Hershkovitz in 1990 to Codajaz, a town on the left (northern) bank of the Rio Solimoes in Amazonas State.
C. torquatus was considered to be polytypic until the 2002 review of M. van Roosmalen and colleagues; they considered the subspecies to be full species. C. torquatusis the representative species of the torquatus species group. Monotypic.
Distribution. Brazilian Amazon, N of the rios Solimoes and Japura, from the confluence with the Rio Negro in the E, and as far W as the Rio Apaporis, a left (N) bank tributary of the Japura, the N limit is the Negro/Uaupés river system. Its distribution may extend into SE Colombia between the rios Apaporis and Vaupés, where it probably intergrades with the distribution of the White-chested Titi ( C. lugens ), although there are no data on the ranges of either species from this region. Descriptive notes. Head—body 29.5-34.8 cm (males), tail 40.5-48.5 cm (males) and 42-51 cm (females); weight unknown, but probably 1000-1500 g as for other members of the torquatus species group. Male and female White-collared Titis are similar in size and coloration. Their bodies are uniformly dark reddish to blackish-brown, except for hands and feet, which are whitish or buffy. Tail is blackish, mixed with some red tones. Ventral surfaces of body are reddish or reddish brown. Throat collar is weakly defined, buffy to whitish, and does not extend to base of ears. Face is black.
Habitat. [Lowland Amazon rainforest at elevations of 100-200 m.
Food and Feeding. There is no information available for this species.
Breeding. There is no specific information available for this species, but all titis form monogamous breeding pairs. The male provides parental care by carrying the single offspring.
Activity patterns. There is no information available for this species.
Movements, Home range and Social organization. There is no information available for this species.
Status and Conservation. CITES Appendix II. Classified as Least Concern on The [UCN Red List. Deforestation rates are still low in the geographic distribution of the Whitecollared Titi, and although there is some hunting by indigenous peoples,it does not appear to be a major threat. It is found in Jat National Park.
