Based on Roemer and Schultes (1819) name Ardisia tsjeriam-cottam, Candolle (1834) proposed a new combination E. tsjeriam-cottam . Both the names were published by citing Rheede’s (1685) ‘Hortus Malabaricus’ and Lamarck’s (1783) ‘Encyclopedie methodique’. The types of Roemer & Schultes and Lamarck’s are available at BM and P, respectively ( Stafleu & Cowan 1979; 1983; 1985). Authors could not find the specimens of E. tsjeriam-cottam collected by above workers. Moreover, our search for E. tsjeriam-cottam at Candolle’s collection in G-DC was also unsuccessful. However, an illustration available in Hortus Malabaricus “Tsjeriam-cottam” (5: t. 11) matches with the protologue. Hence, we designate here, this illustration as lectotype according to Art. 9.3 of ICN ( Turland et al. 2018) and the specimen MMS1644 (BSI) from Ambewadi, Kolhapur is designated here as epitype as per Art. 9.9 of ICN ( Turland et al. 2018).
