Herbs to reclining subshrubs up to 1.5 m tall. Stem glabrous. Petiole 8‒20 mm long; blade elliptic to oblong, 10‒19 × 2.5‒ 5.8 cm, glabrous above, glabrescent to sparsely puberulous along the major veins beneath, base decurrent, usually asymmetric, apex acuminate to cuspidate, margin finely toothed, teeth 5 or more per cm, acute, slightly curved, densely and homogeneously scattered along the entire margin, teeth of two different sizes, the long ones (up to 3 mm long) interspersed with the short (up to 1.5 mm long) ones, hydathodes extramarginal, secondary veins 10‒13 per side, intramarginal vein lacking. Peduncle (4.5‒) 6.0‒9.0 cm long, glabrous, ebracteolate. Hypanthium obconic to subglobose, 3 × 2 mm, glabrous. Calyx lobes narrowly ovate, 2.0‒5.2 × 0.6‒1.1 mm, ascending, glabrous, basally contiguous, margin entire, apex obtuse. Corolla green to light yellow, glabrous; tube 10‒15 × 1.2‒1.6 mm, slightly inflated proximally and distally; lobes narrowly ovate, falcate, dorsal lobes 7‒9 × 1.0‒ 1.6 mm, lateral lobes 5.5‒6.5 × 1.0‒ 1.4 mm, ventral lobe 5‒6 × 1.0‒ 1.5 mm. Synandrium 2.4‒3.1 cm long, exserted up to 9 mm; filament tube 1.9‒2.5 cm long, glabrous; anther tube 5‒6 mm long, glabrescent to sparsely puberulous; ventral anthers barbate. Berries globose, 8‒9 × 8‒9 mm, not inflated, glabrous, yellowish-green, lilac when ripe.

Phenology: —The species has been collected with flowers in February, March and April and November, and with fruits in March, April, June, August and November.

Distribution, ecology and conservation status: — Burmeistera corei is restricted to the Western and Central cordilleras of Colombia, in the departaments of Antioquia, Caldas and Chocó, at elevations between 1100 and 2300 m. Following the IUCN´s (2022) criteria [B1(EOO) and B2(AOO), conditions (a) and (b), and C2(a)(i)], this species qualifies as Critically Endangered.

Notes: — Burmeistera corei is similar to B. sylvicola , from which it differs by the leaf blade with marginal sharp teeth and without intramarginal vein, the hypanthium obconic to subglobose, the calyx lobes 2.0‒5.2 × 0.6‒1.1 mm, ascending, glabrous, basally contiguous, the corolla with dorsal lobes 7‒9 × 1.0‒ 1.6 mm, and lateral lobes 5.5‒6.5 × 1.0‒ 1.4 mm, and the filament tube glabrous (versus the leaf blade with marginal obtuse teeth and intramarginal vein, the hypanthium subglobose to urceolate, the calyx lobes (4–)6–10 × 1.5–2.0 mm, patent to reflexed, glabrescent to puberulous, basally spaced by sinuses ca. 1 mm wide, and the filament tube glabrescent to puberulous in B. sylvicola ).
