Type:— COLOMBIA. Cauca: Cordillera Occidental, El Trueno , 2700‒ 3000 m, 29–30 Jun 1922 (fl), F. Pennell 7545 (holotype: NY! [ NY00468067 ] ; isotype: GH! [GH00033069]) . Figs. 5G–I View FIGURE 5 , 6 View FIGURE 6 .

Scandent or reclining subshrubs. Stem densely puberulous, with ferrugineous indumentum. Petiole 2‒7 (‒18) mm long, densely puberulous; blade elliptic to broadly ovate, 4‒10(‒24) × 3.0‒6.0(‒10.5) cm, puberulous especially along the veins above, densely puberulous, with brown trichomes beneath, base rounded to obtuse, slightly asymmetric, apex obtuse to rounded, sometimes mucronulate, margin entire to very slightly crenate, with 1 to 3 slightly extramarginal hydathodes per centimeter, secondary veins 5 to 9(rarely to 14) per side, intramarginal vein lacking. Peduncle 2‒7 cm long, puberulous, ebracteolate. Hypanthium shortly cylindric to urceolate, 6‒8 × 5‒6 mm, densely puberulous. Calyx lobes narrowly ovate, 6‒9 × 1.5‒3 mm, patent, densely hirsute-ciliate, with brown indumentum, basally spaced by sinuses 0.6‒0.8 mm wide, margin with 2 to 4 teeth per side. Corolla pale green to cream or suffused with purple, densely puberulous; tube 1.1‒1.5 cm long, inflated distally; lobes linear, falcate, apex acute, dorsal lobes 9‒11 × 2‒3 mm, lateral lobes 7‒8 × 2.0‒ 2.8 mm, ventral lobe 6‒7 × 1.5‒2.0 mm. Synandrium 1.7‒2.4 cm long, exserted up to 13 mm, glabrous; filament tube 1.3‒1.9 cm long; anther tube 4‒5 mm long, scarcely puberulous, ventral anthers barbate at preanthesis, later ebarbate. Berries globose, 1.6‒2.0 × 1.5‒2.0 cm, inflated, puberulous, white with lilac spots.

Phenology: —The species sets flowers and fruit in January to April, June to August, and from October to December.

Distribution, ecology and conservation status: — Burmeistera breviflora is endemic to Colombia. It occurs in sub-Andean to high-Andean forests of the Western and Central cordilleras of the departments of Antioquia, Cauca, Chocó, Huila, Valle del Cauca, and in the southern Andes of Nariño, at elevations between 1800 and 3400 m. Following the IUCN (2022) Guidelines, this species qualifies for the Near Threatened (NT) category.

Notes: — Burmeistera breviflora is similar to B. longifolia , from which it differs by the leaf blade elliptic to broadly ovate; the peduncle puberulous; the calyx lobes narrowly ovate, 6–9 × 1.5–3.0 mm; the corolla with tube 1.1–1.5 cm long, and dorsal lobes 9–11 × 2–3 mm; the ventral anthers barbate at preanthesis; and the puberulous berries 1.6–2.0 × 1.5–2.0 cm(versus the leaf blades narrowly ovate; the peduncle glabrous; the calyx lobes oblong-triangular, 1.5–3.5 × 1–2 mm; the corolla with tube 1.5–2.0 cm long, and dorsal lobes 12–13 × 3.8–4.0 mm; the ventral anthers ebarbate; and the glabrous berries 2–3 × 1.5–2.6 cm in B. longifolia ).
