44. Burmeistera reclinata F.González & J.M. Vélez, Caldasia View in CoL 40: 275. 2018.
Type:— COLOMBIA. [ NY01856294 ]). Figs. 20 View FIGURE 20 , 22A–E View FIGURE 22 GoogleMaps .
Herbs to subshrubs with reclinate, climbing or pendant twigs up to 2 m long. Stem glabrous. Petiole 5–9 mm long, glabrous; blade ovate, narrowly ovate, elliptic or narrowly elliptic, 5–6(–11) × 1.8–2.2(–2.8) cm, 3–4 times as long as wide, glabrous above and beneath, glaucescent beneath, base obtuse to round, slightly asymmetric, apex acute to acuminate, margin subentire, with 4 to 12 intramarginal hydathodes evenly distributed per side, main vein prominulous above, impressed beneath, second and higher order veins inconspicuous except for the 5 or 6 pairs of secondary veins slightly prominulous above, intramarginal vein lacking. Peduncle 3.3–6 cm long, 2–3 times longer than the leaves, glabrous, ebracteolate. Hypanthium obconic, 3–4 × 2.0– 2.6 mm, glabrous. Calyx lobes linear, 5–9 × 0.6–1.0 mm, patent to reflexed, basally spaced by sinuses up to 1.2 mm wide, margin with 2 or 3 teeth per side, apex obtuse. Corolla uniformly green or yellowish green, or sometimes suffused with reddish lines, glabrous; tube 1.1–1.3 cm long, 2.5‒3.5 mm diameter at its mid-level, slightly inflated proximally and distally, lobes ovate, slightly falcate, apex acute, dorsal lobes 9–11 × 2.5–3.2 mm, lateral lobes 8–9 × 2–3 mm, ventral lobe 8.0–8.5 × 2.0– 2.2 mm. Synandrium 1.8–2.7 cm long, exserted up to 9 mm; filament tube 1.5–2.3 cm long, puberulous; anther tube 3–4 m long, glabrescent, ventral anthers barbate, with a dense tuft of long and curly white hairs during preanthesis that fall off during anthesis. Berries oblate, 7–8 × 9–10 mm, not inflated, spongy, white suffused with vinaceous lines especially on the calyx lobes, border of hypanthium yellow.
Phenology: — Burmeistera reclinata sets flowers and fruits from January to July, and in September, October and December.
Distribution, ecology and conservation status: — Burmeistera reclinata is restricted to the northern region of the Colombian Western and Central cordilleras, where it has been collected in Las Orquídeas National Natural Park, and in the municipalities of Sonsón and Valdivia (Antioquia), in cloud forest edges between 900 and 2630 m of elevation. Following the IUCN´s (2022) criteria [B1(EOO) and B2(AOO), conditions (a) and (b), and C2(a)(i)], this species qualifies as Critically Endangered.
Notes: — Burmeistera reclinata belongs to the group of species with narrow, glabrous leaves with glaucescent lower surface. It is similar to B. crassifolia (see distinctive traits under the latter).
Burmeistera maculata E.Wimm. ( Wimmer 1943: 160) View in CoL was described as a new species, based on F. Pennell 4440, collected in “ Colombia: Dept. Bolivar, im Walde bei Antizales, 1700‒2000 m ”, on February 25–26, 1918. The leaves of the holotype, deposited at NY are similar to those found in B. reclinata and the remaining species with glaucescent leaves. Unfortunately, no isotypes were located and the only flower in the specimen is severely fragmented to a small piece of the corolla; the calyx and the fruits, crucial to provide diagnostic and differential traits within Burmeistera , were not preserved. Thus, the identity of B. maculata is uncertain, as it could correspond to any of the species with glaucescent leaves, and it will remain as a species with “non satis notae”, as it was originally published by Wimmer (1943).
