Lectotype ♂: OUMNH. As reported by Byers (1962a) the specimen’s labels read “ P. americana Swederus, Act. Holm. 1787 View in CoL , p.278”, and “ fasciata Fab., E. S. , 2: 98, N. Am.” A third label is a “blue, lozenge-shaped tag bearing the letter W”. A small fourth label reads “N. H.” Recent photos also show a red label indicating “ Lectotype Panorpa americana Swederus, George W. Byers, 1962 View in CoL ”, and an Oxford label reading “Mecopt. No 3”. Byers (1962a) believed the females in the original series were a different species.

Panorpa fasciata Fabricius 1793: 98 (description); Turton 1802: 406 (name americana View in CoL associated with fasciata ); Klug 1836: 105 (synonymy with rufa View in CoL ); Westwood 1841: 189 (synonymy of fasciata and americana View in CoL , also concluded that Klug’s sample had comprised several species); Rambur 1842: 331 (description), pl. 8 fig 5 (habitus); Byers 1962a: 470 (stated that Klug never claimed a North American fasciata , subsequent references by others to Panorpa fasciata Klug are incorrect).
