Revised description. Very large, very slender, solid shell of more than 18 telescopic teleoconch whorls. Apical angle ~10–15°. Protoconch unknown. Early teleoconch whorls high, flat sided to weakly concave, with moderately broad, beaded subsutural band, delimited by distinct groove, and weakly opisthocyrt axial ribs, separated by slightly narrower interspaces. Axial sculpture and spiral groove fading out around tenth teleoconch whorl. Whorls allometrically widening, causing slightly coeloconoid spire profile. Subsutural band broad, inflated, not delimited. Whorl profile weakly concave below. Suture narrowly impressed. Shell surface of late teleoconch whorls smooth except for delicate, strongly sigmoidal growth-lines. Last whorl moderately high, ~30% of total height; with rounded basal angulation. Base abruptly constricted. Fasciole strongly twisted, broad, with prominent growth increments, adapically delimited by prominent carina. Aperture narrow, pyriform. Columella strongly twisted and strongly excavated in adapical half. Sharp columellar fold. Columellar callus forming broad, thickened rim, partly detached from base, persisting on parietal area. Outer lip not preserved. Siphonal canal moderately narrow, deeply incised, strongly twisted, deflected to the left.
Discussion. This species is characterized by the large size of its shell, coeloconoid, telescoped spire and strongly reduced sculpture. Sacco (1891a: 21) considered it to be a variety of the Tortonian Terebra cacellensis Pereira da Costa, 1867 and Davoli 1977 synonymized both species with question mark. However, they differ in the much smaller size of Terebra cacellensis , which attains only about half the size of Terebra transylvanica and lacks a columellar fold. In addition, T. transylvanica has much wider and relatively lower teleoconch whorls (see Pereira da Costa, 1867: 81, pl. 13, figs 3–6; Davoli 1977: pl. 3, figs 15–16, 18, 20–24). Terebra subulocacellense ( Sacco, 1891a) from the Burdigalian of Italy is another very similar species but differs in its convex whorls and lacks columellar folds (see Sacco 1891a: pl. 1, fig. 44; Ferrero Mortara et al. 1984; pl. 7, figs 1a–b).
Paleoenvironment. Unknown, probably middle to outer neritic environments based on the occurrence in the Baden Formation in the Vienna basin ( Kranner et al. 2021).
Distribution in Central Paratethys. Badenian (Middle Miocene): Vienna Basin: Baden-Sooss ( Austria) (hop opus); Făget Basin: CoŞteiu de Sus, Lăpugiu des Sus ( Romania) ( Hoernes & Auinger 1880).
