Material examined

Cotypes, 2 adult females, USA, Maine, Aroostook Co., Caribou, Sphagnum bog, 5 June 1953, by H. Habeeb (HH530056); 3 adult females, Canada, New Brunswick, Victoria Co., Gillespie, small pools, in Sphagnum bog beside small lake, 27 May 1958, by H. Habeeb (HH580013).

Diagnosis

Adult female. Ratios vi: vi–vi = 4.0 (3.2–4.1), ve: ve–sci = 4.4 (4.4–4.9, sci: sce = 0.1 (0.1–0.2), c1: c1–c1 = 1.2 (1.2–1.8), e1: e1–e1 = 0.9 (0.8–1.0), c1–c1: d1–d1: e1–e1: f1–f1 = 1.1 (0.9–1.2): 0.9 (0.9–1.5): 1.3 (1.3–2.3): 1.0. Dorsalmost setae on femora I 1.7 (1.4–1.7) times as long as h1.

Description

ADULT FEMALE (n = 5)

Gnathosoma . Finely punctate. Chelicerae about twice as long as movable digits (165 (165–175): 85 (85–103)). Palp 211 (211–238). Subcapitular setae m slightly longer than n, m = 55 (55–60), n = 53); m–m less than distance n–n; m–m = 33 (33–43), n–n = 35 (35– 48), m–n = 23 (23–25).

Idiosoma. Nearly round, 487 (481–533) long, 388 (388–463) wide. Dorsal idiosomal shields finely punctate. Prodorsal groove longer than distance between c1–c1; internal sacs faintly punctate, small. Dorsal idiosomal setae slender and pointed; ratios vi: vi–vi = 4.0 (3.2–4.1), ve: ve–sci = 4.4 (4.4–4.9, sci: sce = 0.1 (0.1–0.2), c1: c1–c1 = 1.2 (1.2–1.8), e1: e1–e1 = 0.9 (0.8–1.0), c1–c1: d1–d1: e1–e1: f1–f1 = 1.1 (0.9–1.2): 0.9 (0.9–1.5): 1.3 (1.3– 2.3): 1.0; eyes 48 (48–58) in diameter; setal lengths: vi 198 (178–213), ve 210 (210–243), sci 28 (28–30), sce 200 (200–230), c1 193 (193–225), d1 201 (201–238), d 2 215 (215– 253), e1 213 (195–228), e 2 218 (218–233), f1 95 (95–123); distances: vi– vi 48 (48–60), vi– ve 75 (75–88), ve–sci 50 (48–53), sci–sce 51 (50–55), c1–c1 155 (125–168), c1–d1 123 (123–161), d1–d1 135 (135–163), d1–d2 168 (168–220), d1–e1 148 (140–173), e1–e1 193 (193–233), e1–e2 190 (190–220), e1–f1?, f1–f1 145 (103–148); humeral setae c2 141 (138– 145), shorter than c1. Endopodal shields, mid­ventral shield, suranal and aggenital shields punctate and faintly reticulated. Ventral setae 1a longer than other two pairs, 1a 48 (48– 58), 3a 43 (39–43) and 4a 43 (38–42). Suranal and aggenital shields with 2 pairs of suranal setae and 3 pairs of aggenital setae, ratio h1: h2 = 1.0 (1.0–1.1), lengths: h1 45 (45–55), h2 43 (43–53), ag1 49 (49–52), ag2 50 (50–51), ag3 50 (50–51). Ano­genital valves fused, with 3 pairs of pseudanal setae and 1 pair of genital setae, ps1 thicker than other two pseudanals, ps 3 43 (36–43), ps 2 41 (34–42), ps1 33 (28–35), g1 42 (38–40).

Legs. Length: leg I 358 (358–393), leg II 345 (345–395), leg III 363 (363–390), leg IV 405 (405–458). Dorsalmost setae on femora I (dFI) slender and pointed, 78 (60–83) long, 1.7 (1.4–1.7) times length of h1. Dorsalmost setae on genua I (dGI) as dFI, 78 (78–90) long; on genua I nearly 1/4 length of dGI, 20 (18–20), on genua II peg­like, with stout tips, 13 (10–13). Counts of setae and solenidia on legs I–IV: coxae 2 + 1 elcp, 1, 1, 2; trochanters 1, 1, 2, 1; femora 6, 5, 3, 3; genua 3 + 1, 3 + 1, 1, 1; tibiae 5 + 1 + 1 p, 5 + 1 p, 5 + 1 p, 5 + 1 p; tarsi 13 + 1, 9 + 1,,. Lengths of solenidia: I 40 (37–41), II 43 (41–45), III 18 (18–24), IV 18 (18–23).

Remarks

Habeeb (1962) erected a new subgenus Paludocaligus of the genus Homocaligus based on his new species Homocaligus (Paludocaligus) muscorum , which he believed to be different enough from Homocaligus . However, according to his later decision of raising Paludocaligus to the genus rank and founding a new genus Caligohomus for Homocaligus aquaticus ( Habeeb 1966) , he was not very sure of the concept of the true Homocaligus . After examining the specimens of Homocaligus in the Oudemans collection, Wood (1969) revised the genus and synonymized Paludocaligus with Homocaligus . He also redescribed the adult female and protonymph (originally as nymph) of Homocaligus muscorum .
