Description

Male. Body length 4.5–5.5 mm. Thorax and abdomen with olive green metallic luster and sparse pruinosity. Head: eye bare; frons about 1.5–2.5 times as wide as anterior ocellus; frontal vitta brown to dark brown, equal to or narrower than width of one fronto-orbital plate, obliterated in the middle; frontal setae 7–8, without orbital seta, ocellar setae long and large, and longer than frontal setae; fronto-orbital plate and parafacial with grayish-white pruinosity; parafacial as wide as 1st flagellomere; antenna black, 1st flagellomere about 2.0 times as long as wide, arista ciliated, the longest aristal hairs shorter than its basal diameter; facial carina short and narrow; epistoma slightly projecting in profile; gena brownish-black, with sparse grey pruinosity, with 5–6 rows of upcurved subvibrissal setulae, genal height about 1/5 of eye height, beard and postgena setae all black, dorsal area of occiput with hairs; proboscis thin and long, prementum shiny, with few grey pruinosity, about 3.0 times as long as broad; palpus black, equal to the length of proboscis.

Thorax. Ground color black, with slight grey pruinosity; scutum with four indistinct vittae, with 2 rows of presutural acr, postsutural acr 2, dc 2+3, ia 0+2, pra about 1/2 length of posterior notopleural seta; notopleuron with hairs; lateral and ventral margins of scutellum, basisternum of prosternum, anepimeron, meron and katepimeron all bare; katepisternal setae 1+1.

Wing. Light brown, slightly hyaline, veins brownish-yellow; basicosta black, costal spine short and small, Sc straight; R4+5 and M veins parallel, more or less separated distally; calypters white, halter dark brown.

Legs. Entirely black; fore tibia with a p row, 3 stronger in the middle, fore tarsus longer than fore tibia; 1st to 3rd tarsomeres on mid tarsus with a row of straight, short and pectinate setae, which are longer than the diameter of each tarsus; hind femur curved, in distal 1/4 with a strong av row, without distinct pv; hind tibia slightly curved and S-shaped in profile, setae in av and pv rows hair-like, on ventral surface with more thin and long hairs, in distal half with fringe hairs; pectinate setae of 1st to 3rd tarsomeres on mid tarsus slightly shorter than diameter of mid tarsus; the apical ventral projection becoming indistinct; claws of all legs distinct, and equal to the length of pulvilli.

Abdomen. Black, tapered, all tergites with indistinct lateral patch, marginal setae and discal setae of each tergite long and large, sternite 1 with hairs; outboard processes of cerci very blunt, in posterior view; processes on inner margin of surstylus blunt in the middle and apical process pointed in lateral view.

Female. Body length 4.5–5.5 mm. Frons about 0.42–0.45 times width of head; frontal vitta about 3.5–4.0 times as wide as fronto-orbital plate, with 3 pairs of orbital setae, 1 pair of interfrontal setae, 4 outer vertical setae, 1 upper orbital seta; genal height about 1/4 of eye height; parafacial wider than width of 1st flagellomere; epistoma distinctly protruding in profile; mid femur with a v and pv rows in basal half, mid tibia with 1–2 ad, 1–2 pv; hind femur with a complete av row, and 3–4 long hair-like pv in distal half; hind tibia with 4 av, and in pd row with 2 pd stronger than others, its ventral surface without long hairs; pectinate setae of 1st to 3rd tarsomeres on mid tarsus slightly short; 3 spermathecae, the intersegmental membrane between sternite 7 and sternite 8 sclerotized, other characters same as in male.

Type material

Holotype, male, P.R. CHINA: Xinjiang, East Kunlun, Kuchaogou gull, 3400–4500 m, 6.vii.1984 (Chaoqun Xiang).

Paratypes, P.R. CHINA: 2 males, 4 females, same data as holotype.

Allotype, P.R. CHINA: 1 female, same data as holotype.

The specimens are deposited in the Institute of Entomology, Shenyang Normal University, Shenyang, China.

Remarks

This species resembles Drymeia brumalis (Rondani) in China, but it differs from it in its katepisternal setae 1+1; with 2 rows of presutural acr, postsutural acr 2, 1st to 3rd tarsomeres on mid tarsus with a row of straight, short and pectinate setae, longer than each tarsus; hind femur curved, in distal 1/4 with strong av row, without distinct pv, hind tibia curved and S-shaped in profile, av and pv rows hair-like, its ventral surface with more thin and long hairs, in distal half with fringe hairs, pectinate setae of 1st to 3rd tarsomeres on mid tarsus slightly shorter than diameter of mid tarsus.

Etymology

The species name is from the Latin words minut- meaning small and fica meaning nectar, referring to the male resembling the larger species Drymeia magnifica (Pont) , as magn- means big.
