sp. nov.

Rhyacophila steinmanni , new species

Figs 7–12 View FIGURES 7 – 12

Male. Body length 8 mm, length of each forewing 10.0 mm, width of each forewing 4 mm, length of each antenna 6 mm. Body, antennae, palpi, wings, abdomen brown, legs yellowish brown in alcohol.

Male genitalia ( Figs 7–12 View FIGURES 7 – 12 ). Segment IX (IX, Fig. 7 View FIGURES 7 – 12 ) narrow rectangular in lateral view, without apicodorsal lobe. Segment X (X, Figs 7–8 View FIGURES 7 – 12 ) narrowly rectangular in lateral view and pentagonal in dorsal view, with two longer parallel lateral margins. Anal sclerite (a.s. Figs 7, 9 View FIGURES 7 – 12 ) hatchet-shaped in lateral view, nearly oval in caudal view, with two tiny horns on dorsal surface. Apical band (a.b., Fig. 7 View FIGURES 7 – 12 ) flat ellipse in lateral view. Endotheca (end., Figs 7, 10, 12 View FIGURES 7 – 12 ) short tube, posterior part broader in lateral and ventral views, phallicata (ph., Figs 7, 10, 12 View FIGURES 7 – 12 ) composed of stout proximal part and narrow tubular distal part, phallic apparatus without dorsal appendage (d. app.) in lateral view. Retracted parameres (par., Figs 7, 10, 12 View FIGURES 7 – 12 ) longer than phallicata, with proximal part in sheath and bell-shaped distal part with hair brush on distal margin in lateral and ventral views. First segment of each inferior appendage (f.s., Figs 7, 11, 12 View FIGURES 7 – 12 ) broad, moderately long in lateral and ventral views﹔ upper lobe of second joint of each inferior appendage (s.j., Figs 7, 11, 12 View FIGURES 7 – 12 ) depressed, long, with subtriangular process on base of lower margin in lateral and ventral views, surfaces covered with long hair. Lower lobe ( Figs 7, 11 View FIGURES 7 – 12 ) footprint-shaped, longer than upper lobe in lateral view, covered with short hair.

Female. Unknown.

Holotype: 3, NEPAL: [Gorka District] Ganesh Himal, Kamalang, 28o 06’N, 85o11’E, 1850 m elevation, by light trapping, 27 October 1995, leg. Márton Hreblay and László Bódi (gen. prep. No. 114, Ottó Kiss, coll. Mátra Museum).

Diagnosis. This species belongs to the Rhyacophila scissa Group of the R. philopotamoides Branch ( Schmid 1970) . The male genitalia of the new species are very similar to those of R. s. scissa Schmid and R. scissoides Schmid (1970, plate XXIV, figs. 9–18) and R. shismatica Sun & Yang 1995 , but differs from them in that:

1. Segment X pentagonal in dorsal view (not trapezoidal as in R. s. scissa and R. scissoides or not quadrate dorsally as in R. schismatica ).

2. Anal sclerite hatchet-shaped in lateral view, nearly oval in caudal view, with two tiny horns on dorsal surface (not forming bulge as in R. s. scissa , R. scissoides or R. schismatica ).

3. The distal end of the phallicata is not furcated (furcated in R. schismatica ).

4. The distal part of each paramere is bell-shaped (not golf-club-shaped as in R. schismatica ).

5. The lower lobe of the second joint of each inferior appendage is footprint-shaped and longer than the upper lobe (not rectangular and with equally long lobes as in R. schismatica ).

Etymology. Named for the late Professor Henrik Steinmann, who was my first mentor.
