This is a paraphyletic assemblage of different lineages related to Hierodula that share a dilated pronotum, a seemingly homoplasic character within this group. A thorough revision of the whole complex is needed. There are 34 currently recognized species in S and SE Asia, and about two in Borneo. Arboricolous, prefers forests.

Distribution. N India, China, S Japan, Myanmar, Malay Peninsula, Java, N Borneo, Ambon, Timor, Maluku Islands ( Giglio-Tos 1912, 1927, Werner 1933, Ehrmann 2002).

Bornean records. Sarawak: Baram River (Brunner von Wattenwyl 1898); Brunei: Kuala Belalong (OK in situ); Sabah: N Sabah (AFUW), Danum Valley ( Helmkampf et al. 2007), Labuan Island ( Hebard 1920); Kalimantan: Balikpapan ( Werner 1921).

Remarks. This is the only species of this complex confirmed for Borneo.
