Quercus ajoensis C.H.Mull., Madroño View in CoL View at ENA 12(5): 140, fig. 1 (1954). Type:— U.S.A., Arizona: C. H. Muller & J. M. Tucker

9519 ( Holotype: BH; isotypes: A!, MICH!, MO!, NY!, RSA (image)!, UC!, UCSB (fragment from BH holotype)!,

UCSB!, US!). Quercus turbinella Greene subsp. ajoensis (C.H.Mull.) Felger & C.H.Lowe, J. View in CoL Arizona Acad. Sci. 6(1): 83 (1970). Quercus turbinella var. ajoensis (C.H.Mull.) Little, Phytologia View in CoL 42(3): 221 (1979). Distribution: Mexico (Baja California, Sonora) , U.S.A. (Arizona) .

Quercus albocincta Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 193, pl. 394a–b (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Sonora: J. N. Rose et al. 12787 (Lectotype (designated here): US 00089413!; isolectotypes: NY!, UCSB (fragment)!). Trelease (1924) indicated that the type was at both NY and US .

Distribution: Mexico (Baja California Sur, Chihuahua, Durango, Sinaloa, Sonora).

Quercus alveolata Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 80, pl. 114b (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Puebla: C. A. Purpus 4091 (Holotype: NY00253649 !; isotypes: BM!, F!, GH!, MO!, UC!, UCSB (fragment)!, US!) .

Quercus chihuahuensis Trel., Mem. Natl.Acad. Sci. 20: 85, pl. 130a (1924).Type:— MEXICO, Chihuahua: C. G. Pringle 970 (Lectotype (designated here): MO-473961!; isolectotypes: MEXU!, NY!, UC!, VT!). Trelease (1924, p. 85) wrote “(Pringle, 74, 355, the type)” which would appear to make Pringle 355 the type collection number. He also cited Pringle 970, which based on what he wrote on page 85, would make Pringle 970 a paratype. In the caption to pl. 129a and pl. 129b on p. 220 he wrote “The type collections (Mexico, Pringle: a, no 74; b, no 355). Photographed by permission at Dahlem.” However, in the caption to pl. 130a on the same page he also wrote “The type (Mexico, Pringle 970). Photographed at St. Louis.” If taken all together, our interpretation is that Trelease cited two syntypes for Q. chihuahuensis with one being Pringle 355 at B, now destroyed, and the other being Pringle 970 at MO. We are lectotypifying the name based on the existing syntype at MO. The placement of this species needs additional study, but we consider the type to fall within the variation found within Q. alveolata as broadly interpreted.

Quercus chihuahuensis f. amplifolia Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 86, pl. 131b (1924). Type:— MEXICO, San Luis Potosí: W. Schumann 1313 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): image in Trelease (1924, pl. 131b)!). No extant original material exists, so we are lectotypifying the name based on the image of the holotype.

Quercus chihuahuensis f. microphylloides Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 86, pl. 130b (1924). Type:— MEXICO, San Luis Potosí: W. Schumann 1310 (p.p.) (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): US00089452!). Trelease (1924, p. 86) cited Schumann 1310 (p.p.) as the type of Q. chihuahuensis f. tenuis , but on p. 220 in the caption for pl. 131a, he cited Schumann 1300 (p.p.) as the type at B. The second citation is most likely a typographic error and should have been 1310 (p.p.). The specimens at US of 1310 which we are designating as the lectotype match the description in the original protologue.

Quercus chihuahuensis f. tenuis Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 86, pl. 131a (1924). Type:— MEXICO, San Luis Potosí: W. Schumann 1310 (p.p.) (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): P06852494 !; isolectotype: M!). The specimens at P and M match the description of Q. chihuahuensis f. tenuis .

Quercus deserticola Trel. var. incisa Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 80, pl. 114a (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Hidalgo: Uhde 265 (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): image in Trelease (1924, pl. 114a)!). No extant original material exists, so we are lectotypifying the name based on the image of the holotype.

Quercus infralutea Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 87, pl. 136 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Sonora: J. N. Rose et al. 12788 (Holotype: US00089550!; isotypes: NY!, UCSB (fragment)!).

Quercus panduriformis Trel. f. colimensis Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 63, pl. 63b (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Colima: H. Ross 497 (Holotype: M-0244473!; isotype UCSB (fragment from M holotype)!).

Quercus tamiapensis C.H.Mull., Amer. Midl. Naturalist View in CoL 27(2): 480 (1942). Type:— MEXICO, Sinaloa: H. S. Gentry 5863 (Holotype: US00089669!; isotypes: DS!, GH!, MEXU!, MO!, NY!, RSA (image)!, UCSB (fragment)!).

Distribution: Mexico (Aguascalientes, Chihuahua, Ciudad de México, Colima, Durango, Guanajuato, Hidalgo,

Jalisco, México, Michoacán, Nayarit, Nuevo León, Oaxaca, Puebla, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Sonora ,

Tlaxcala, Zacatecas), U.S.A. (Texas).

Quercus ariifolia Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 74, pl. 97b (1924). Type:— MEXICO, San Luis Potosí: E. Palmer 82 (Holotype: MO-144181!; isotypes: A!, BM!, CAS!, F!, GH!, MEXU!, NY!, UC!, UCSB (fragment from MO holotype)!, US!). This species is close to Q. gravesii , and additional study is needed to determine if it is really distinct.

Distribution: Mexico (San Luis Potosí).

Quercus aristata Hook. & Arn., Bot. Beechey Voy. 444 (1841). Type :— MEXICO, Nayarit: A. Sinclair s. n. (1845) (Holotype: K000512917 !; isotype: E!) .

Quercus planipocula Trel. f. subsessilifolia Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 137 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Sinaloa: M. Narvaez M. & A. E. Salazar 1169 (Lectotype (designated here): ILL00007622 View Materials !; isolectotype: ILL!). Two specimens at ILL are marked as types in Trelease’s hand.

Quercus productipes Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 140, pl. 264b (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Nayarit: J. Gregg 977 (Holotype: MO-3076316!; isotype UCSB (fragment from MO holotype)!).

Distribution: Mexico (Aguascalientes, Colima, Durango, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Jalisco, México, Nayarit, Oaxaca,

Querétaro, Sinaloa, Sonora, Veracruz, Zacatecas). The occurrence of Q. aristata in Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Veracruz reported by Villaseñor (2016) needs to be confirmed.

Quercus arizonica Sarg., Gard. & Forest View in CoL 8: 92 (1895). Type:— U.S.A., Arizona: C. S. Sargent s. n. (23 Mar 1894) (Lectotype (designated here): A00034033!; isolectotype: A!). The two specimens at A were collected from the same tree on the same date and marked as the type. Breedlove considered that Q. arizonica View in CoL could be treated in the broad sense as being the same species as Q. laeta View in CoL , but here we are treating them as distinct species.

Quercus alamosensis Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 179, pl. 361b (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Sonora: E. Palmer 370 (Holotype: GH00055620 !; isotype: US!) .

Quercus arizonica var. wootoni Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 89 (1924). Type:— U.S.A., New Mexico: E. O. Wooton s. n. (1 Oct 1905) (Holotype: NY00248612 !; isotype: US!) .

Quercus sacame Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 89, pl. 142a (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Chihuahua: R. Endlich 1282a (Syntypes at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): image in Trelease (1924, pl. 142b)!). No extant original material exists, so we are lectotypifying the name based on the image of one of the syntypes.

Distribution: Mexico (Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Sonora), U.S.A. (Arizona, New Mexico, Texas). The report of

Q. arizonica from Baja California Sur, Nayarit, Nuevo León, Sinaloa, and Tamaulipas by Villaseñor (2016) is actually

Q. laeta .

Quercus benthamii A.DC., Prodr. 16(2.1): 29 (1864). Type :— GUATEMALA, Quezaltenango: T. Hartweg 563 (Holotype: K000512928 !; isotypes: BM!, CGE!, E!, G!, LD (image)!, NY!, OXF!, P!, UCSB (fragment)!). Nom. nov. for Q. undulata Benth. (1841) non Torr. (1827).

Quercus amphioxys Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. 20: 141, pl. 268a (1924). Type :— EL SALVADOR: G. Niederlein s. n. (9 Jan 1898) (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): image in Trelease (1924, pl. 268a)!). No extant original material exists, so we are lectotypifying the name based on the image of the holotype.

Quercus baruensis C.H.Mull., Trop. Woods 108: 75, f. 1, 2 (1958). Type :— PANAMA, Chiriquí: W. L. Stern & K. L . Chambers 55 (Holotype: WIS00000212 View Materials MAD!). The holotype was formerly at Y .

Quercus crispifolia Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 147, pl. 286 (1924). Type:— MEXICO, Chiapas: E. Reeves 4 (Holotype: ILL00007523 View Materials ! and ILL00010194 View Materials !). The holotype is mounted on two sheets, one with just leaves and the other with just acorns and cups. The sheet with acorns and cups has the label from the collector. The placement of this species needs additional study, but we consider the type to fall within the variation found within Q. benthamii View in CoL as broadly interpreted.

Quercus esesmilensis Tucker & C.H.Mull., Madroño View in CoL 8(4): 115, pl. 14 (1945). Type:— EL SALVADOR, Chalatenango: J. M. Tucker 1198 (Holotype: UC694107 !; isotypes: CAS!, F!, K!, LL (image)!, MICH!, NY!, PH!, UC!, UCSB (fragment)!, US!). The placement of this species needs additional study, but we consider the type to fall within the variation found within Q. benthamii View in CoL as broadly interpreted.

Quercus gemmata Trel., Mem. Natl. Acad. Sci. View in CoL 20: 152, pl. 299b (1924). Type :— EL SALVADOR: G. Niederlein s. n. (9 Jan 1898) (Holotype at B destroyed. Lectotype (designated here): image in Trelease (1924, pl. 299b)!). No extant original material exists, so we are lectotypifying that name based on the image of the holotype.

Quercus lowilliamsii C.H.Mull., Madroño View in CoL 10(5): 138, pl. 11 (1950). Type:— HONDURAS, Morazán: L. O. Williams & A. Molina View in CoL 12760 (Holotype: BH; isotypes: CAS!, EAP (image)!, F!, GH!, MO!, UC!, UCSB (fragment from BH holotype)!, US!) .
