Heleniella Gowin, 1943 View in CoL

We collected two species of Heleniella in Alaska, Heleniella ornaticollis (Edwards, 1929) , a new faunistic record for the Nearctic ( Fig. 10N View FIGURE 10 ), and Heleniella parva Saether, 1985 , a new record for Alaska. The H. ornaticollis specimens are an adult male, a pharate female and pupa from Eagle River in Juneau collected in mid-July, and larval specimens from a bog stream on Unalaska Island and a tributary to the South Fork Koktuli River in late June. In Europe this species is typically found in fast-flowing streams, spring brooks and upper courses of mountain streams ( Moller Pillot 2014). Adults and pupae of both sexes of H. parva were collected from South Fork Chester Creek near Anchorage in mid-July and late August. Ferrington (1987) found many larvae of this species among the root systems of water plants in a sand bottom spring in Kansas. Hayford et al. (2014) reported larvae of Heleniella from the Kuskokwim River. We collected larvae of Heleniella from many streams in Southwest and Southeast Alaska and from South Fork Campbell Creek in Anchorage.
