( Figures 5 View Figure 5 , 6 View Figure 6 )

Type material

Holotype: male ( Figure 5 View Figure 5 ), central Palawan, 15 km west of Bacungan, Takawayan , 150 m, 09°54′ N, 118°38′ E, 18 March 2006, J.H. Lourens ( IRSN). GoogleMaps

Etymology

The specific name is from Latin opacus meaning “shady” or “dark” in reference to the body colour which is blackish and much darker than its congeners.

Measurements of types (one male)

Length of body: 22.2; length of forewing: 26.1; width of forewing: 9.1; width of head including eyes: 6.6; width of pronotum: 7.4; width of mesonotum: 6.3; wingspan: 59.2.

Diagnosis

This species belongs to the Purana carmente species group proposed by Schouten and Duffels (2002), which may constitute an independent genus and will be discussed separately in a future paper, as having the following characteristics: pronotum between central fasciae and lateral fissures unmarked; bases of apical cells 2 and 3 of forewing hardly infuscated; anterior longitudinal vein of apical cell 5 about as long as anterior longitudinal vein of apical cell 7; male operculum long, nearly reaching posterior margin of abdominal sternite III; male timbal cover with a large black marking; uncus not bifurcate; basal lobe of pygofer spine-shaped with a narrow apex.

In the shape of the uncus and the basal lobe of pygofer, this species is closely allied to Purana obducta Schouten and Duffels, 2002 , but distinguished by the darker body pigmentation and the almost entirely black male opercula (shaded with black only along the inner apical margins in Purana obducta ). The male operculum is shorter than that of Purana obducta and does not extend beyond the posterior margin of the sternite III and so fails to cover the tubercles on sternite III.

Description of male ( Figure 5 View Figure 5 )

Ratio of body length to head width about 3.36. Head dark brown with the following black markings: a median large spot enclosing ocelli, with its anterior tip reaching frontoclypeal suture; a pair of irregular-shaped fasciae on sides of the median marking, extending to supra-antennal plate; a transverse fascia along posterior margin of head; and a pair of curved fasciae along compound eyes. Distance between lateral ocelli and compound eyes about as wide as twice distance between two lateral ocelli. Postclypeus moderately swollen. Antennae dark brown to fuscous. Ventral part of head ochraceous with black markings. Postclypeus with fasciae along all transverse grooves, of which lengths are varied, with their medial ends continued to each other. Anteclypeus black except medial and anterior parts. Rostrum fuscous apically; slightly passing posterior margin of hind coxae. Lorum black except about anterior one-third. Gena with a transverse fascia between postclypeus and compound eye, extending to posterior part of compound eye.

Pronotum dark brown. Inner area of pronotum with the following black markings: a pair of central longitudinal fasciae broadened at both anterior and posterior ends; a pair of short, oblique branches from middle of the central longitudinal fasciae along paramedian fissures; a pair of curved fasciae along lateral margins of inner area; and rather indistinct markings or small patches around paramedian and lateral fissures. Pronotal collar with a narrow transverse black fascia along posterior margin and a pair of small fuscous patches sublaterally. Anterolateral pronotal collar slightly developed and dentate.

Mesonotum dark brown with the following black markings: a median longitudinal fascia slightly broadened posteriorly to reach anterior margin of cruciform elevation; a pair of small roundish spots enclosing scutal depressions; a pair of inwardly curved fasciae along parapsidal sutures; and a pair of longitudinal fasciae on lateral sigilla, with their anterior ends reaching anterior margin of mesonotum. Cruciform elevation ochraceous with black anterior and posterior apical parts and posterior margin. Ventral part of thorax ochraceous with patches on basisterna 2 and 3, episterna 2 and 3 and epimeral lobe.

Legs ochraceous. Fore-femur with a small subapical spine as well as primary and secondary spines, all black, and a fuscous fascia along midline of ventral side. Foretibia, tarsus and pretarsal claws mostly fuscous. Mid-tibia fuscous apically. Midtarsus and pretarsal claws mostly fuscous. Hind femur with a fuscous fascia along midline of ventral side. Hind pretarsal claws dark brown.

Wings hyaline. Forewing without distinct infuscations but with indistinct, scarce infuscation at bases of apical cells 2 and 3. Basal membrane and hindwing jugum dark grey.

Operculum black except anterolateral margin; upside-down triangle with posterior angle narrowly rounded, inner margin widely convex and outer margin widely concave; long, nearly reaching posterior margin of sternite III, but not covering tubercle on sternite III. Two opercula apart from each other.

Abdomen about as long as distance from head to cruciform elevation; castaneous with black markings. Tergite 1 posteriorly margined with black and densely covered with silvery hairs. Tergite 2 with a black posterior margin, a medial small oval spot and a pair of paramedian spots fused with posterior margin. Tergite 3 with a black posterior margin, a medial small roundish spot, a pair of small paramedian transverse patches fused with posterior margin, and a pair of lateral spots. Tergite 4 with a black posterior margin, a pair of paramedian patches fused with posterior margin, and a pair of lateral spots. Tergite 5 with a narrow black posterior margin, a pair of paramedian transverse patches situated anteriorly, and a pair of lateral spots. Tergite 6 with a narrow black posterior margin and a broad patch throughout anterior part. Tergite 7 mostly black except posterior margin. Tergite 8 mostly black except posterior submargin. Posterior margin of tergite 3 wider than anterior margin of mesonotum. Timbal cover mostly black except narrow marginal areas; semicircular. Timbal mostly concealed by timbal cover in dorsal view. Ventral part of abdomen dark ochraceous except mostly black to fuscous sternites I, II, VI, VII and VIII. Sternites III and IV each with a pair of nipplelike tubercles on lateral surfaces, protruding posteriad. Tubercles mostly fuscous.

Male genitalia ( Figure 6 View Figure 6 ): pygofer oval in ventral view. Uncus consisting of a median lobe with blunt bicuspid apex and a pair of lateral lobes supporting the median lobe. Upper lobe of pygofer with recurved rounded apex. Basal lobe of pygofer with acutely pointed apex.
