Japanese name: Mikawa-charumeru-so.

Perennial herbs. Rhizomes creeping, with a tuft of leaves at apex. Radical leaf blade widely ovate, deeply cordate, acute, 3-6 cm long, 3-5 cm wide, shallowly lobulate, irregularly toothed, sparsely hirsute on both surfaces, upper surface dark green, lower surface pale green, often with purplish tinge; petiole 5-10 cm long, densely hirsute, with fused axillary stipules at base; stipules scarious, oblong, sparsely minutely hairy along margin. Flowering stems 30-45 cm tall, erect, densely minutely glandular, long glandular hairy and hirsute toward base. Inflorescences racemes, few or loosely many-flowered. Flowers May; pedicel 3-5 mm long, minutely glandular. Calyx tube broadly obconical, densely glandular pubescent, greenish; calyx lobes 5, erect, 1.3-1.4 mm long, greenish, triangular-ovate, acute, nearly glabrous adaxially, densely glandular abaxially, glandular along margins. Petals 5, 7-9(-1 l)-pinnatiparted, spreading or slightly reflexed, greenish or pale purplish, 4.8-6 mm long; pinnae spreading or obliquely ascending, glandular dotted. Stamens 5, alternate calyx lobes, adjacent to base of petals, 1-1.3 mm long; anthers ovoid or broadly ovoid, cordate, with 2 tubercles at apex, ca. 0.9-1.2 mm long at anthesis, yellow. Disc prominent. Ovary inferior. Styles 2, erect, 0.7 mm long; stigmas thickened, shallowly 2- or 4-lobed. Seeds oblong, ca. 1.2 mm long, scabrous, with narrow longitudinal areolae elevated slightly, without papillae, dark brownish.

Chromosome number: 2n = 28 (Wakabayashi 1973).

Japan: C. Honshu (S. Nagano, Aichi and Gifu Pref.). Moist, shady places along streams in mountainous areas. Endemic.
