Cladiopsocus arboricola n. sp.

( Figs 1–12 View FIGURES 1 – 7 View FIGURES 8 – 12 )

Diagnosis. Differing from C. ramulosus (Enderlein) (see Eertmoed 1986), by having a central spot in pterostigma, lacking vein stubs on Rs of forewing ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 7 ), by having a small tooth on the inner edge of the male paraproctal prong, near the base ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 1 – 7 ), by having the male epiproct nearly trapeziform, projected posteriorly and only slightly concave ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 1 – 7 ), and by having the phallosome ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 1 – 7 ) bilobulate and raised distally. Differing from C. uncinatus (New) , by having spur veins on R and M veins of forewings and by lacking rugose processes on the male paraproctal prong. Male forewing with M3 vein forked, and simple in females. Number and position of spur veins varies between individuals and sexes.

Description. Male. Color. Head ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1 – 7 ) dark brown, with a light brown band to each side of ocellar group, towards epistomal sulcus, a pale brown band from ocellar group to vertex; postclypeus with diagonal, V-shaped brown bands, with outward curved ends. Compound eyes black, ocelli hyaline. Antennae brown, flagellomeres with clear distal ends. Meso- and metanotum dark brown, thoracic pleura and legs light brown. Forewing membrane slightly smoked; pterostigma with brown spots, forewing veins ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 7 ) ending in a brown spot at wing margin, also brown spots on wing margin, from pterostigma to confluence of CuA2. Hindwing ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 7 ) with a brown spot on vein ends, and brown spots on wing margin, as illustrated. Abdomen light brown, with subcuticular light brown bands, clunium and subgenital plate brown.

Morphology. As in diagnosis plus the following: Phallosome ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 1 – 7 ), membranous, elongate, almost trapeziform, narrow at base and distally wide, external parameres rounded distally, with numerous pores. Hypandrium ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 – 7 ) broad, setose, anteriorly concave and distally rounded. Male paraprocts ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 1 – 7 ) with prominent, setose mesal tubercle; mesal prong stout, strongly sclerotized, distally acuminate; sensory fields with 20 trichobothria on basal rosettes. Forewings with vein stubs on R2+3, R4+5, M1–M3 and areola postica, as illustrated. M3 forked.

Female. Color. Essentially as in the male.

Morphology. As in diagnosis, plus the following: vein stubs on forewing essentially as in the male. Paraprocts ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 8 – 12 ) broad, with setae as illustrated, sensory fields with 23 trichobothria on basal rosettes; epiproct ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 8 – 12 ) bell-shaped. Gonapophyses ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 8 – 12 ), slender and distally acuminate; V2 +3 with a long, proximal heel, V3 as an elongate lobe on V2, bearing a row of 17 setae, distal process almost straight, acuminate distally, bearing microsetae on surface. Subgenital plate ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 8 – 12 ) almost semicircular, densely setose, posteriorly rounded.
