DIAGNOSIS. This species can be distinguished from A. potosiana by the frons scaling, which is concolorous with the head in A. chiapas , and the absence of struts of the socii, wich are present in A. potosiana . The contrast between the fasciae and the ground color of the FW is not as conspicuous in A. chiapas as in A. potosiana .

DESCRIPTION. MALE. FW length 11.2–11.6 mm (mean = 11.4; n = 5). HEAD: Frons convex concolorous with head, vertex smooth, brown. Antenna with brown scaling. Labial palpus 2.0X length of inter-antennal space, brown laterally, paler on inner surface; junction of segments II and III an oblique angle. THORAX: Dorsum smooth scaled, brown; tegula concolorous. FW brown, termen slightly produced. Fasciae inconspicuous, a small patch of darker scales at center of median fascia. Costal fold absent. HW beige with darker scales scattered over the anal area. ABDOMEN: Pale brown. Genitalia as in Fig. 71 (slide # 43749a, VBC, Mexico, Chiapas, San Cristóbal; n = 2). Uncus extending beyond socii. Transtilla rectangular, fine spines numerous over posterior margin. Valva subrectangular. Sacculus sclerotized, ca. 0.5X length of valva, emarginate, with finlike ventral process; sacculus extending beyond margin of valva as short terminal lobe. Aedeagus ca. 0.9X length of valva, slender, curved at 0.8 length from base.

FEMALE. FW length 12.7–13.1 mm (mean = 12.9 mm; n = 4). HEAD and THORAX: As described for male except darker scales at position of median fascia. ABDOMEN: Genitalia as in Fig. 97 (slide # 43749b, VBC, Mexico, Chiapas, San Cristóbal; n = 1). Sterigma developed into large squarish lateral pockets; median sinus rounded. Ductus bursae 2.0X length of papillae anales, slender throughout; sclerotized basally. Ductus seminalis arising near ostium .

TYPE MATERIAL. Holotype: Male: MEXICO: CHIAPAS: San Cristóbal de Las Casas , 2300 m, 23/ 27.vi.1981, V. O. Becker ( VBC).

Paratypes. 7M, 2F, same data as holotype (5M, 2F, VBC; 1M, EME; 1M, USNM); 1F, 13.v.1969 (J. H. Martin, CNC) ; SE Tomala, 1F, 5.vi.1969 (A. Mutuura, CNC) . OAXACA: Paradero de Mi Ká, Yolox , 2000 m, 1M, 5/ 14.xi.1980 (E. Welling, EME) . VERACRUZ: 6 air km SW Banderilla 1710 m, 1M, 17.viii.1987 (J. Brown & J. Powell, EME) .

DISTRIBUTION AND BIOLOGY. This species was collected in Mexico in the states of Chiapas, Oaxaca, and Veracruz ( Fig. 134) between 1700 and 2300 m elevation. The immatures are unknown .

ETYMOLOGY. The species epithet is derived from the Mexican state of Chiapas.
