5.2.7. Myrcia neopunctata M.F.Santos , nom. nov. Aulomyrcia punctata O. Berg (1857 –1859: 546). Type:— BRAZIL. “Prov. S. Pauli”, March 1826, Riedel s.n. (holotype LE [image!]).
The leaves of Myrcia neopunctata have an adaxial sulcate midvein, flowers with a prolonged hypanthium, free calyx lobes and a two-locular ovary (as described in the protologue). This combination of features allows the assignment of this species to Myrcia sect. Aulomyrcia . More collections are necessary to better understand the circumscription of this species and its relationship to other species of the section. The cited specimen is considered the holotype as we believe it is the only one in existence annotated as Aulomyrcia punctata by Berg.
