Type Locality: South Africa or Namibia, mountains near mouth of Orange River.

Vernacular Names: Western Rock Elephant Shrew.

Synonyms: Elephantulus barlowi Roberts 1938 ; Elephantulus gordoniensis Roberts 1946 ; Elephantulus kobosensis Roberts 1938 ; Elephantulus montanus Lundholm 1955 ; Elephantulus okombahensis Roberts 1946 ; Elephantulus tarri Roberts 1938 ; Elephantulus typus (Lesson 1830) ; Elephantulus vandami Roberts 1924 .

Distribution: W Namibia; SW and SC South Africa.

Conservation: IUCN – Least Concern.

Discussion: No subspecies are recognized.
