Distribution. Indo-West Pacific: Madagascar, Mauritius, Réunion, Seychelles, Red Sea, Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, and Australia.

Regional records. PG: Iran ( Naderloo & Türkay 2012; present study); GO: Iran (present study).

Habitat. Sandy with rubble and rocky-sand flats, under rocks and large pieces of coral rubble; intertidal to 5 m deep.

Remarks. This species is one of largest Alpheus in PG and GO (TL: 10 cm). Small-sized specimens were free-living ( Fig. 2F View FIGURE 2 ), but larger specimens ( Fig. 2E View FIGURE 2 ) were found associated with the ophiuroid Macrophiothrix elongata Clark, 1938 . Furthermore, PG specimens differ from Singaporean specimens in color pattern (see Anker & De Grave, 2016). To clarify the species identity, a molecular analysis and thorough comparison of morphology and color patterns were applied on the present study material. Accordingly, these specimens were precisely categorized into “symbiont ” and “ non-symbiont ” A. edamensis (unpublished molecular data by authors based on COI sequencing).
