scientific name

Rhinogobius sp.
status

Rhinogobius sp. – Non-native ( Fig. 454)

Common name: Pr: Gavmahi-ye talabi, En: Pond or lake goby.

Diagnosis: Distinguished by predorsal covered by large ctenoid scales, reaching anteriorly to near posterior. 5–6 transverse rows sensory papillae below eye, several short transverse. Rows of sensory papillae between 2 longitudinal rows of sensory papillae on cheek. Scales are ctenoid and 23–40 in lateral series.

Meristic characters: D 1: V–VIII, D 2: I 7–10, A: I 6–10, P: 18–19, LS: 28–36, TV: 26–28.

Distribution: Caspian, Namak, Hari and Tigris basins ( Fig. 455). Found in Jajurud, Kalat, Hari, Aras, Gaverud, Eivashan and Zarineh Rivers as well as Anzali Wetland.

Taxonomy: Morphological differences between Rhinogobius species are very subtle and we believe without a molecular study or a proper revision of the group and without the occurrence data (they are non-native) it is very hard to unequivoquely identify the right species. As such studies are not available; therefore, here we identify the populations at the genus level.

Conservation: IUCN: Not Evaluated, PC: Non-native, Not Applicable.
