Barbus lacerta Heckel View in CoL [J. J.] 1843: 1044 [54]; Type locality: Kueik [Qwaik] River near Aleppo, Syria. Lectotype: NMW 54227–1. Paralectotypes: NMW 54227–2–4 (3); SMF 3471 [ex NMW in 1844] (1), ZMB 3236 [ex NMW] (1).

Barbus scincus Heckel [J. J.] 1843: 1049 [59]; Type locality: Aleppo [now Haleb], Syria. Syntypes: NMW 22272 (2), 54525–26 (1, 1).

Barbus lacerta var. escherichii Steindachner [F.] 1897: 688 [4]; Type locality: Ankara [Angora], Turkey. Syntypes: (several) NMW 54086–87 (4, 4), 54158 (7), 54232–33 (1, 3), 78221 (1).

Barbus plebejus kosswigi Karaman [M. S.] 1971: 206; Type locality: Haman Suyu [Hamann], Beytusebab [Beytüssebap]- Hakkari Province, Tigris basin, Turkey. Syntypes: ZMH H4209 and 1159 (6 of 13).

Common name: Pr: Sas mahi, Belizem, Orenj, En: Lizard barbel.

Diagnosis: Almost triangular gular region and almost a long anal fin. The tip of the anal fin, when pressed to the body, reaches beyond the middle of the distance between the base of the last anal fin ray and the lower caudal fin origin, often to the caudal fin base.

Meristic characters: D: III–IV (III) 7–8 (8), A: III 5–6 (5), P: 14–18 (15–16), V: 8–10 (9), GR: 9–10, LL: 54–67, TV:?.

Distribution: Tigris basin ( Fig. 56). Found in several rivers around the upper part of Tigris basin: Little Zab, Sirvan, Alvand, Dinevar, Roudbar, Kahman, Gamasiab, Gave and Goleyn Rivers.

Taxonomy.

Conservation: IUCN: Not Evaluated, PC: Least Concern. This species has a relatively wide distribution range with no known major threat affecting them; therefore, we classified it as Least Concern.
