Barbus grypus Heckel View in CoL [J. J.] 1843: 1048 [58]; Type locality: Tigris River, Mosul, Iraq. Syntypes: NMW 54160–61 (1, 2), 91023 (1); SMF 2613 [ex NMW] (1, dry), ZMB 8788 (1).
Labeobarbus kotschyi Heckel [J. J.] 1843: 1049 [59]; Type locality: Tigris River, Mosul, Iraq. Syntypes: NMW 49729 (1), 91022 (1).
Common name: Pr: Shirbot, En: Shabout.
Diagnosis: A cylindrical body, fleshy lips, two pairs of barbels, a strong, smooth spine in the dorsal fin, and less than 40 scales in the lateral line.
Meristic characters: D: IV 7–9 (8), A: III 5, P: 15–18, V: 7–8, GR: 16–21, LL: 32–37, TV: 44–50.
Distribution: Tigris, Persis and Hormuz basins ( Fig. 48). Found in Seymareh, Armand, Karun, Dez, Karkheh Rivers and Hor Al Azim Wetland (Tigris basin). Also found in Zohreh, Shapur, Helleh, Dalaki, Dasht-e Palang, Shur, Dozgah and Mond Rivers and Lake Parishan (Persis basin), in Hormuz basin found in Hasan Langi and Kul Rivers.
Taxonomy: Coad (1991) placed in Barbus, Roberts and Khaironizam (2009) in Tor but Borkenhagen (2014) transferred to Arabibarbus .
Conservation: IUCN: Not Evaluated, PC: Least Concern. It is a widespread species with numerous populations and no known major threat to their populations. Therefore, we classified it as Least Concern.
