Discognathus obtusus Heckel View in CoL [J. J.] 1843: 1072 [82]; Type locality: Aleppo, Syria and Mosul, Iraq. Syntypes: NMW 53257 (10), 53238 (4), 79372 (1, dry); SMF 447 (1) and 5408 (2) [ex NMW in 1843].

Discognathus crenulatus Heckel [J. J.] 1847: 262; Type locality: Confluents of Araks River and sources of Saadi and Kara-Agatsch rivers. Syntypes: NMW 53236–37 (14, 7).

Common name: Pr: Gel khorak, Gel cheragh, En: Common garra, Red garra.

Diagnosis: Distinguished from all other species of Garra in Iran except Garra gymnothorax by having usually 8 branched dorsal fin rays (vs. 7). It is distinguished from G. gymnothorax by the fully scaled breast or embedded scale in some populations (vs. naked). Abdomen and predorsal middorsal line covered by scales.

Meristic characters: D: III 8, A: III 5, P: 12–13, V: 7–8, GR: 20–24, LL: 32–41, TV: 32–37.

Distribution: Tigris, Kor, Maharlu Lake and Persis ( Fig. 134). Found in Gamasiab, Qarasu, Dinevar, Seymareh, Kashkan, Karkheh, Sirvan, Gaveh, Beshar, Zohre and Karun Rivers.

Taxonomy: Goren (1974) placed in Garra .

Conservation: IUCN: Least Concern ( Freyhof 2014n).
