Lagenosoma picta Brauer, 1882: 81 View in CoL — Woodley, 1989: 314 [catalogue as L. pictum View in CoL ], 2001: 169 [catalogue as L. pictum View in CoL ]. Massicyta picta (Brauer) — sensu Hardy, 1920: 46 [incorrect combination].
Diagnosis. Antennae relatively elongate, flagellomere VIII deeply plumose distally, flagellomeres IV–VII all short and approximately equal in length; face broadly rounded yellow with erect, white setae; scutellum yellowish-orange margin, darker anteriorly; abdomen strongly petiolate; wing infuscate anteriorly.
Redescription. Body length = 10.0–11.0 mm. Head. Yellow and black; frons flat, female frons yellow with dark medial furrow and elongate diamond shaped marking extending dorsally to ocellar tubercle; face broadly rounded, extensive erect, white setae; parafacial yellow with margin of silver pubescence along eye; ocellar tubercle black; postocular ridge yellow, narrowly carinate in female, not carinate in male; occiput slightly concave, yellow, black medially, covered with white setal pile; antenna (length = 4.0 mm) with scape and pedicel and flagellomeres I–V bright yellow, flagellomeres VI–VIII black, flagellomeres V–VII relatively short and combined length equal to length of flagellomere III, ratio of length of flagellomere VII to VIII is 1: 20.5, flagellomere VIII elongate and deeply plumose with microtrichia. Thorax. Black and yellow; scutum with white to yellow setal pile, yellow markings on antepronotum, postpronotal lobe, scutum anterior to transverse suture and adjacent to postpronotal lobe, anepisternum dorsally and posteriorly; scutellum yellowish orange, darker anteriorly with black setae; coxae black; rest of legs dark yellow with brown suffusion basally on femora; haltere yellow; wing infuscate anteriorly, venation brown; pterostigma light brown. Abdomen. Abdomen strongly petiolate basally, segments 1 and 2 slightly wider than scutellum abruptly widening at segments 3–5, black and yellow variable markings; frequently with tergites mostly black with yellow or orange posteriorly; segment 1 with lateral flange well developed. Male genitalia. Epandrium similar to other species except more convex in profile; gonocoxites quadrangular with triangular posterolateral processes; gonostylus bilobed and relatively large; phallus relatively elongate and narrow with medial lobe only longer and broader than lateral lobes. Female genitalia. Not dissected.
Comments. Lagenosoma pictum has distinctive body patterning, a uniquely shaped petiolate abdomen and dark wing markings. The wings are held out at rest (while in all other species in this group of genera the wings are folded over the abdomen), similar to that by many social wasps. This species is similar to L. propinquum based on the similar shape of the male genitalia, especially the shape of the gonocoxites, the triangular posterolateral processes and well-developed gonostyli. Lagenosoma pictum is distributed throughout eastern Queensland.
