Diagnosis. Antennae relatively short, flagellomere VIII narrow and not plumose distally, flagellomeres IV–V slightly longer than VI–VII, IV–VII combined approximately equal to flagellomere III in length; face bulbous and projecting ventrally, yellow with a pair of black spots below antennae; male postocular ridge narrow and slightly bulbous towards gena, occiput suffused with black; male abdomen not petiolate.
Description. Body length = 9.0–10.0 mm. Head. Yellow; frons bulbous around base of antennae, female frons with pair of black spots above antennae; face yellow with pair of black spots below antennae, broadly rounded and bulbous, extended ventrally around buccal cavity, overlain with short, white setae; parafacial yellow with margin of silver pubescence along eye; ocellar tubercle black; postocular ridge yellow, highly carinate in female, narrow in male, tending to slightly bulbous ventrally; occiput flat, black medially (more extensive in male), covered with short white setae (longer laterally in male); antenna (length = 2.2 mm) with scape and pedicel and flagellomeres I–III dark yellow, flagellomeres IV–VIII black, flagellomeres IV–V slightly longer than VI–VII, IV–VII combined approximately equal to flagellomere III in length, ratio of length of flagellomere VII to VIII is 1: 9.5, flagellomere VIII relatively short and narrow, microtrichia not plumose. Thorax. Black and yellow; male scutum black with yellow areas on postpronotal lobe, laterally along transverse suture and on postalar callus, female scutum predominantly yellow with black medial stripe and interrupted lateral stripes, scutum overlain with recurved, elongate, whitish-yellow setae; pleuron yellow, anepisternum with black triangular marking in ventral half, katepisternum black ventrally; scutellum black with orange margin; coxae yellow; rest of legs yellow with tarsi black distally; hind tibia and tarsus slightly longer and thicker than other legs; haltere yellow; wing slightly infuscate, venation dark; pterostigma light brown. Abdomen. Narrowed basally but not petiolate, petiolate basally, segment 1 wider than scutellum with segment 4 widest and subequal to width of scutum, abdomen mostly dark yellow with variable shading of black medially on tergites, more extensive anteriorly and in female; segment 1 with lateral flange well developed. Male genitalia. Epandrium rounded; gonocoxites quadrangular, narrowed posteriorly, with triangular posterolateral processes; gonostylus rounded; phallus relatively elongate with medial lobe much longer than lateral lobes. Female genitalia. Not dissected.
Etymology. The species epithet is derived from the Latin varigatus —of different sorts, referring to the variation in colour and markings between the sexes.
Comments. Lagenosoma varigatum sp. n. is quite different from other species in the genus, principally in the proportional lengths of the antennal flagellomeres ( Fig. 20 View FIGURE 20 ), and the shape of the face and male abdomen, which is not petiolate at all. The protruding face is unique and differentiates it from all other species. There is distinct sexual dimorphism in the scutal and scutellar markings. Lagenosoma varigatum sp. n. is found in southern and central Queensland.
