Type species. Cicada semilata Walker, 1850 View in CoL ( St. Lucia and French Guiana).

Remarks. The genus is spread over much of the New World with examples being reported from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Surinam, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay, and Venezuela ( Metcalf 1963a; Ruffinelli 1970; Duffels & van der Laan 1985; Martinelli & Zucchi 1997; Sueur 2000; Sanborn 2006a; 2007a; 2007b; 2010a; 2011a; 2013; De Santis et al. 2007).
