ALCESTA STOLL, 1782

Pap[ilio] Dan[aus] Cand[idus] alcesta Stoll, 1782a: 175 , pl.379, fig. A [original plate 365, fig. B]. ‘Côte de Guinée’ (E. de Marre).

Papilio View in CoL Danaus View in CoL Candidus alcesta, Stoll, 1782b: 6 [No. 88].

Material examined. No potential Stoll specimens located.

Current status. Valid species in Leptosia ( Ackery et al., 1995) .

ALCMEONE CRAMER, 1777

( FIG. 24 View Figures 21–26 )

Pap[ilio] Dan[aus] Cand[idus] alcmeone Cramer, 1777: 71 , 147, pl.141, fig. E [original plate 108, fig. D]. ‘Côte de Coromandel’ [= south-eastern India] and Surinam [error or a misidentification].

Papilio View in CoL Danaus Candidus View in CoL alcmeone, Stoll, 1782b: 5 [No. 17].

Material examined. Lectotype ♂ (here designated to stabilize use of this name) with van Lennep label ‘ No. 17 ALCMEONE Cr. II. 141 E.’ and Felder label ‘ Coll. Lenep’ ( BMNH (E)#665071) is a good match for original plate 108, fig. D; it has been re-pinned. A second ♂ (possibly a paralectotype) is discussed under ecclipsis below. There is also a possible paralectotype male in RNHL (G. Lamas, pers. comm.).

Current status. Here considered a junior subjective synonym of Catopsilia p. pomona (Fabricius, 1775) (following Yata, 1981). Bridges (1988) lists it as a junior synonym of the Neotropical species Aphrissa statira ( Cramer, 1777) [in Phoebis (Aphrissa) ] but notes that it may belong with the Oriental Catopsilia crocale ( Cramer, 1775) [= C. pomona Fabricius ]. Males of these two species can be quite similar, but the above lectotype belongs with Catopsilia p. pomona Fabricius. The second ♂ (possibly a paralectotype) is identifiable with Aphrissa statira (Cramer) . The possible paralectotype male in RNHL belongs with A. statira (G. Lamas, pers. comm.).
