DAPLIDICE LINNAEUS OF CRAMER, 1777

Pap[ilio] Dan[aus] Cand[idus] daplidice, Cramer, 1777: 114 , 148, pl.171, figs C, D [original plate 146, figs B, B]. Cape of Good Hope [= South Africa.] [Misidentification.]

Papilio View in CoL Danaus View in CoL Candidus daplidice, Stoll, 1782b: 5 [No. 60]. Stoll synonymizes daplidice with Papilio hellica [sic] Linnaeus [= Pontia helice (Linnaeus) View in CoL ].

Material examined. No potential Cramer specimens located.

Identity. Pontia helice (Linnaeus, 1764) .

DELIA CRAMER, 1780

( FIG. 29 View Figures 27–32 )

Pap[ilio] Dan[aus] Cand[idus] delia Cramer, 1780a: 144 , 174, pl.273, fig. A [original plate 243, fig. B] (junior homonym of Papilio delia Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775 [ Nymphalidae ]). Virginia [= USA] (Cornelis van Lennep).

Papilio View in CoL Danaus Candidus View in CoL delia, Stoll, 1782b: 6 [No. 87].

Material examined. Syntype ♂, with van Lennep label ‘ No. 87 DELIA Cr. III. 273. A.’ ( BMNH (E)#665101) is a good match with original plate 243, fig. B; there is some damage to thorax, but no definite evidence that it has been re-pinned .

Remarks. This specimen is also a syntype of Pieris daira Godart, 1819 , and Eurema demoditas Hübner, [1819] , both of which were proposed as replacement names for Papilio delia Cramer. The question of which of these two names has priority has yet to be formally resolved ( Miller & Brown, 1981), although current usage (e.g. Lamas, 2004b) favours daira Godart [Godart’s work was published [13 February] 1819, that of Hübner in ‘[early 1819]’].

Current status. Invalid senior subjective synonym of Eurema daira (Godart, 1819) ( Lamas, 2004b) .
