NOTES: Lister (1911: 156) wrote “var. gracilis on dead wood.” and the following collections “Vienna (BM 1831); Ceylon (BM 2616); Cameroons, West Africa (BM 2618); Japan (BM 2617); Philadelphia (BM 1884).” In BM we only found one of these, a box (BM 1884) that is an exsiccata of Ellis & Everhart, North American Fungi, Second Series, from Philadelphia, that is the Wingate material. The variety was based on Comatricha gracilis Wingate issued, without description in Ellis & Everhart, N. Amer. Fungi, Series II: No. 2094, 1888. Wingate’s name is a nom. nud., but G. Lister’s varietal name was, of course, validly published.
