Physarum nitens (Lister) Ing, Trans. Brit. Mycol. Soc. View in CoL 78(3): 444. 1982

Neotypus (designated by Ing, Trans. Brit. Mycol. Soc. 78: 444. 1982): UNITED KINGDOM. England, Bedfordshire , Woburn Sands, 52.015ºN 0.649ºW, Oct. 1909, K. Higgins ( BM 3007 !, BM001089739 ) GoogleMaps .

BM s.n. one slide/ Woburn Sands, Bedfordshire, England [but vice-county 24, Bucks], Oct. 1909, K. Higgins/ BM001089174. [BM] 3007 / Physarum virescens Ditm. / v. nitens / On Vacc[inum]. myrtillus, Woburn Sands/ 14 Oct.09, K.H. N.XXIX.50 / BM001089739. [This box is not mentioned by B. Ing but has the same data as the slide chosen as the neotype. In the same box there are two other samples but from different localities and a date later than the publication].

NOTES: Ing (1982: 444) addressed the problem of the typification of this variety. This author commented on American and European specimens as follows: “In the original description Lister referred to two specimens, both American. In the second edition of the Monograph (Lister 1911) three specimens, all American, are cited. As it seems proper at this stage to regard the American taxon as P. luteolum it would be appropriate to choose European material to typify P. nitens .” He selected the earliest specimen named by Miss Lister from Europe as the neotype. In BM the slide selected by Ing as the neotype ( BM s.n.) was located, with a reference to notebook XXIX: 50. However a box ( BM 3007 ) was also located with three specimens in it, one from Woburn Sands, 6 and 14 Oct.09, K.H., with comments in the same notebook XXIX: 50, as the neotype designated by Ing (1982). We consider this to be an isoneotype. In the same box there are two carded specimens from other localities “Clogham Kerry, 9.14, M.D Stedfore, XXXIV.178” and “Frenshay, 7.16, XXXVIII: 46” with dates later than the publication of the variety .
