Robinson leg.; 1 male, 1 female, NHMW 4011, Cochea River, above Dolega, 280 m, 8.ii.1975, I. Poglayen-Neuwall leg.; 1 female (cw 49.9, cl 28.4), USNM 1256156, lectotype, David River, about 8°28’N 82°24’W, approximately 1200 m elevation; 1 female (cw 31.3, cl 19.2), paralectotype, USNM 5512, same data as lectotype.

Description of gonopod. Straight in mesiocaudal view, apex bent approximately 90° in laterocephalic direction. Marginal suture on mesial side, straight; marginal process short, angled, not produced beyond the distal border of apex. Mesial process small, subtriangular, slightly downturned. Lateral process long, approximately 70–80% of stem length (from proximal opening to caudal border of apex), usually slightly shorter than or as wide as lateral end of apex, with shallow depression around middle; lateral border nearly straight or slightly concave, distal lobe thicker distally. Distocaudal ridge short, narrow, well separated from distal border of lateral process by distinct depression. Apex oblong, narrow; caudal border straight or slightly convex, with small notch near lateral end. Field of apical spines well developed, facing towards cephalolateral side.

Lectotype and type locality. Female, cw 49.9, cl 28.4, USNM 1256156. Panama, Chiriquí Province, David River, about 8°28’N 82°24’W, approximately 1200 m elevation (Pacific drainage).

Distribution. Southern Costa Rica (San José and Puntarenas Provinces) and western Panama (Chiriquí Province), Pacific drainage ( Fig. 79 View FIGURE 79 ).

Remarks. This species was described from two female syntypes ( Rathbun, 1893). Because the current classification of pseudothelphusid crabs is based on the G1 morphology ( Smalley, 1964a, b; Rodriguez, 1982), the validity of this species is questionable, particularly because new records presented in this paper show that other Ptychophallus species ( P. paraxantusi and P. montanus ) can also occur in the same region of its type locality in the Pacific drainage of western Panama. To avoid nomenclatural instability, we decided to recognize the present species based on Rodríguez remarks (1994: 302), but suggest that further morphological and molecular studies including large series of specimens from western Panama should be performed to clarify the taxonomic status of this species.

The G1 morphology of the present species resembles that of P. exilipes and P. lavallensis , particularly the very long lateral process. In P. colombianus , the lateral process has a subrectangular format and it is not wider than the lateral end of the apex, while it has a broadly subtriangular appearance and it is wider than the lateral end of apex in the other two species, a subtle difference that sometimes can be hardly noticed if the specimens are not fully grown males.
