Description of gonopod. Straight in mesiocaudal view. Marginal suture on mesial side, straight; marginal process rounded to subtriangular, not produced beyond distal border of apex. Mesial process subtriangular, slightly downturned. Lateral process moderately long, approximatelly 70–75% of stem length (from proximal opening to caudal border of apex), strongly bilobed, with distinct median concavity on caudal surface; lateral border with distinct median incision; proximal lobe usually rounded, wider than distal lobe, with few scattered minute setae on caudal, lateral surfaces; distal lobe broad, usually tranversal, moderately swollen distally on cephalic surface, as wide as or usually wider than lateral end of apex. Distocaudal ridge distinct, narrow, well separated from the distal border of the lateral process by distinct depression. Apex bent approximately 90° towards laterocephalic side; oblong, narrow in distal view; caudal border with narrow notch near lateral end. Field of apical spines well developed, facing towards cephalolateral side.

Holotype and type locality. Male, cw 70.4, cl 42.7, USNM 19484. Costa Rica, Cartago Province, Cachí, Reventazón River (Atlantic drainage). Both gonopods of the holotype have been dissected.

Distribution. Central and southeastern Costa Rica, on both Atlantic and Pacific drainages, and western Panama, Pacific drainage ( Fig. 84 View FIGURE 84 ).

Remarks. The resemblances and possible synonymy of this species with P. montanus are discussed above. The G1 of Ptychophallus (Ptychophallus) tumimanus ingae Pretzmann, 1978 , ( Fig. 56 View FIGURES 44 – 60 ) has the lateral process narrower than that of the holotype of the nominal species ( Fig. 55 View FIGURES 44 – 60 ), otherwise they are very similar. Such difference may be due to the size dissimilarity between the holotype specimens of both taxa. We observed that the width of the lateral process varies with size, being narrower than the lateral end of apex in smaller specimens (e.g. INPA 1835, cw 25.4 cl 15.9; Fig. 60 View FIGURES 44 – 60 ), slightly or clearly wider in larger ones (e.g. INPA 1835, cw 32.9 cl 20.1; Fig. 59 View FIGURES 44 – 60 ). The shape of the lateral lobes can also be variable (the proximal lobe is usually rounded but sometimes can be subquadrate, e.g. USNM 230099, Fig. 58 View FIGURES 44 – 60 ) as well as the cleft between them. The cleft is usually deep, but shallow in a few specimens (e.g. INPA 1832; Fig. 57 View FIGURES 44 – 60 ).

The senior author found in the TMNH collection an uncatalogued lot with a single male bearing an old label stating “ Pseudothelphusa (Tehuana) lamellifrons poglayenorum n. sp. PARATYPUS, Guacimal River, Costa Rica, Poglayen 1975 leg. et don.”, and a newer one saying “ Pseudothelphusa (Tehuana) lamellifrons poglayenorum n. sp. Paratypis 1 male, Guacimal River, Guatemala [sic] leg & don: Poglayen, 1975 (new label by Fitspa’k, 1994)”. Pretzmann (1978, 1980) listed four males and one female (NHMW 4010) as the paratype specimens of P. (P.) tumimanus ingae , but only two males were found in this lot by one of us (CM) at NHMW. The paratypes of Pseudothelphusa (Tehuana) lamellifrons poglayenorum Pretzmann, 1978 (see Pretzmann 1978, 1980) consist of two females. It is possible that one male paratype of P. (P.) tumimanus ingae was donated to TMNH and that it represents the uncatalogued specimen, in spite of the doubtful label.
