Type species: Pterolichus phylloproctus Mégnin & Trouessart, 1884 , by original designation.
The genus Aetacarus currently comprises 14 species, including both the new species described below, and Aetacarus hirundo comb. nov. herein transferred from Hieracolichus . Mites of this genus are mainly associated with accipitriform birds ( Accipitridae View in CoL , Sagittariidae View in CoL ) but two species were described from bustards (Otidiformes: Otididae ) ( Gaud & Atyeo 1975, Gaud 1968, 1983, Proctor et al. 2006): A. phylloproctus ( Mégnin & Trouessart, 1884) from Haliaeetus leucogaster (Gmelin, 1788) View in CoL , A. hyalothrix ( Gaud & Mouchet, 1959) from Gypohierax angolensis (Gmelin, 1788) View in CoL , A. andrei Gaud, 1983 from Kaupifalco monogrammicus (Temminck, 1824) View in CoL , A. avicedae Gaud, 1983 from Aviceda cuculoides Swainson, 1837 View in CoL , A. eurychaetus Gaud, 1983 from Hieraaetus ayresii (Gurney, 1862) View in CoL (= H. dubius View in CoL ), A. leptotrichus Gaud, 1983 from Circus macrourus (Gmelin, 1770) View in CoL , A. milvi Gaud, 1983 from Milvus aegyptius (Gmelin, 1788) View in CoL , A. puylaerti Gaud, 1983 from Haliaeetus vocifer (Daudin, 1800) View in CoL , A. elanoides Proctor et al., 2006 from Elanoides View in CoL f. forficatus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Accipitridae) View in CoL , A. laurencei Gaud, 1983 from Sagittarius serpentarius (Miller, 1779) (Sagittariidae) View in CoL , A. otidis ( Mégnin & Trouessart, 1884) from Chlamydotis macqueenii (Gray, 1832) (= Otis houbara ), A. eupodotidis ( Gaud, 1968) from Eupodotis senegalensis (Vieillot, 1821) (Otitidae) .
