Figs.6–9 View FIGURES 6–9

Coleopterodes liliputiana var. brunnea Drake & Poor 1938: 104 View in CoL ; Drake & Ruhoff 1965:122. Coleopterodes brunnea Drake 1944: 67 View in CoL ; Drake & Ruhoff 1965:122.

Material examined: 3 female and 2 male, Argentina, Buenos Aires, Chacabuco, Berg col. ( MNLP) .

Description: General coloration reddish brown. Body length 1.87–2.17 (mean = 2.06) ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 6–9 ). Head length 0.27–0.36 (mean = 0.32), width 0.36–0.42 (mean = 0.38). Head covered with short, scattered setae. Two pairs of tubercles; anterior pair same length as occipital pair; both pairs testaceous, anterior pair with blunt ends facing inward, occipital ends facing outward ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 6–9 ). Eyes ovate, height 0.11–0.15 (mean = 0.13), width 0.10–0.15 (mean = 0.12). Labium extending slightly beyond prosternum ( Fig. 8 View FIGURES 6–9 ). Antennae thick, covered with abundant, short, stout, decumbent hairs, total length 0.84–0.86 (mean = 0.85), segment I and II stout, segment I subconical, length 0.19–0.25 (mean = 0.22); segment II barrelshaped, length 0.11–0.16 (mean = 0.14); segment III cylindrical longest and slenderest, length 0.26–0.37 (mean = 0.32); segment IV claviform, lenght 0.16–0.19 (mean = 0.17). Pronotum length 0.45–0.52 (mean = 0.48), width 0.52–0.72 (mean = 0.60). Collar composed of three rows of punctuations, scarcely raised ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 6–9 ). Posterior process pale at the apex. Rostral laminae curving inward towards both extremes; metasternum longer than wide, covered with long, abundant hairs ( Fig. 8 View FIGURES 6–9 ). Hemelytra punctuations regularly rounded with spatuliform sensilla, between 0 and 3 on each punctuation, more abundant punctuations with three sensilla ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 6–9 ). Typical areas of hemelytra not distinct, veins as in previous species. Male and female similar in shape and coloration.

Type material examined: Holotype female, Argentina, Buenos Aires, Chacabuco, Berg col. ( MNLP) ; Paratype, female, Argentina, Buenos Aires, Chacabuco, Berg col. ( MNLP) .

Measurements Holotype: Body length 2.05. Head length 0.40, width 0.42. Antennal segment I length 0.26, segment II length 0.16, other segments missing. Pronotum length 0.52, width 0.65.

Measurements Paratype: Body length 2.15. Head length 0.35, width 0.40. Antennal segment I length 0.27, segment II length 0.15, other segments missing. Pronotum length 0.55, width 0.70.

Geographic distribution: Argentina (Buenos Aires: Chacabuco)

Host plant: Baccharis pingraea

Comments: Drake & Poor (1938) considered this species to be a variety of C. liliputianum , and the description mainly consisted of a list of minor differences between the variety and the species. These authors mentioned variations in the shape and sizes of the hemelytra punctations, in the general coloration, total length of the body, shape of the III antennal segment, and length of the antennae. Later Drake (1944) considered it a distinct species but never made a complete description, and only mentioned the characters that justify his decision, i.e., the length of the antennae and the general coloration. Above is the first complete description of this species.
