Type species.

Catascopus mirabilis  Bates 1892 (by original designation).

Type locality.

Southeast Asia (Myanmar and the Malay Peninsula).

Taxonomic notes.

In a short footnote, Habu (1967) introduced the subgenus Catascopoides  . His rationale for this subgenus included both unique mandibular form (Fig. 23B) and distinctive pubescence on the ventral surface of the fore and mid femora. Later, and apparently unaware of Habu’s short treatment, Straneo (1994), erected the now synonymized subgenus Dentiscopus  , that was based largely on the same characters. These characteristics are indeed unique within the Catascopus  s. l. and the three currently known species appear to be quite closely related.
