Taxonomy. First record from Lebanon as Holocentrum rubrum Forskäl 1775 by George et al. (1964: 16); subsequently recorded as Holocentrus ruber (Forsskål) by Mouneimné (1977: 62); as Holocentrus ruber (Forsskål 1775) by Mouneimné (2002: 107–108); recently recorded as Sargocentron rubrum by Harmelin-Vivien et al. (2005: 629); as Sargocentron rubrum by Carpentieri et al. (2009: 3); as Sargocentron rubrum by Bariche et al. (2015: 2366); as Sargocentron rubrum by Fanelli et al. (2015: 2169); and Sargocentron rubrum by Aguillar et al. (2018: 82). Material in collection: AUBM, FMNH and USNM.

Distribution. Red Sea, Indo-West Pacific: East Africa and Madagascar east to Tonga, north to southern Japan, south to Western Australia, New South Wales ( Australia) and Lord Howe Island; southeastern Atlantic; Mediterranean Sea and Sea of Marmara (Red Sea immigrant).

Conservation. IUCN: Global ( LC: 4 March 2015). Capture and threats: Unknown. Occurrence: Very common. Non-indigenous species, no conservation action needed .
