Juncus effusus Linnaeus View in CoL , Species Plantarum 1: 326. 1753 View Cited Treatment .
"Habitat in Europae uliginosis, α in alpibus." RCN: 2531.
Lectotype (designated here by Kirschner): Herb. Linn. No. 449.6 ( LINN) .
Current name: Juncus effusus L. View in CoL ( Juncaceae ).
Note: Although Carter (in Milne-Redhead & Polhill, Fl. Trop. E. Africa, Juncaceae : 2 1966) indicated unspecified material in LINN as type, she did not distinguish between several specimens there associated with the name. As these specimens are evidently not part of a single gathering, Art. 9.15 does not apply. Obermeyer (in Leistner, Fl. Southern Africa 4(2): 76. 1985) treated 449.3 (LINN) as the type, but this sheet is unannotated by Linnaeus and is not original material for the name. Kirschner & al. (in Sp. Pl. - Fl. World 8: 88. 2002) indicated 449.6 (LINN) as lectotype, apparently following Lye (in Edwards & al., Fl. Ethiopia Eritrea 6: 387. 1997) but Lye, like Carter, did not distinguish a single sheet as type. As Kirschner & al.'s type statement is later than 2001, their omission of the phrase "designated here" or an equivalent (Art. 7.11) means that the choice is not effective. However, this is rectified here.
